Aren't there any sheep hunters out there? I have never been sheep hunting before, but have decided to start accumulating points in hopes of drawing a tag in a few years.

Donmillion, welcome to the forum. I'm not a sheephunter, but have been active on this board for several months. I've been amazed that no one ever posted in the sheep section, especially given some of the active folks we have from out West. Hopefully you'll break the logjam and get things flowing. Good luck.

Donmillion, what is the average preference point build up for the units you want to hunt?

I have heard 10 years isn't unreasonable, but I haven't reviewed the DOW stats on the big horn draw to verify that.

Of course it depends on the unit you want to hunt and your resident status. I'm a resident of Colorado and the way I'm reading the statistics that they publish I'm expecting to need 4 or 5 points to draw a license in the unit I want to hunt. I have 2 points at this time.

Of course, the statistics are very confusing, so it may be that I'm reading them wrong.

I do see bighorns from time to time going east along I-70 usually somewhere between Georgetown and Eisenhower Tunnel.

Last year in this area in early January during a snow storm, there were about 10 standing just off the road. I stopped and watched for awhile, there was a nice ram in the bunch.

From my maps this would probably be Unit 39.

The point system in Colorado is not as stated in one of the previous notes. In Colorado you can get up to three preference points...once you get three then you go into the basket to draw a tag...thsy also have a weighted point system that comes into play for the number of years in a row that you have applied. I was gathering my points for the last 4 years...and my first year eligible (this year) I was damn lucky to get a tag for area S-9.

I have hunted sheep including the Marco Polo sheep at a height of over 15000 ft. in the Karakorum mountain range which is part of the Himalayan range.Other species of sheep such as the Gudh as it is locally called in the Kirthar range of Pakistan is also a very challenging hunt.Other animals in both these locations is the Ibex which i've been fortunate enough to hunt.

... maybe this will break the log jam. I'm Idaho - and they don't have a pref. point system ... pure chance each year ... best hunt unit is 1/200 or so odds ... some are lower, much lower ... 1/3. I drew in 27-1 - better odds of drawing - but tough hunt - brutal terrain and difficult access (MF Salmon, Unit 27-1). Certainly a dream comes true to get the tag - but now it's reality time. Any pointers? Terrain varies from below 4000 ft, where it appears the ewes and lambs mingle with the rattlesnakes and chuckar, to almost 10,000 ft. Will the rams be up high? ... or, gulp, in the vast elevation difference somewhere in between?

Having a bighorn tag is my ultimate hunting dream. I'm 29 years old and hope to hunt sheep before I turn 40. Should I be accumulating points by now? I also have a preconception that it will cost me around 10,000 dollars to hunt R.M.Bighorns in a western state as a nonresident. Is this cost estimate accurate? What Western state has the best bighorn #'s and chance of a draw?

I'm new at the sheep thing but that looks about right for a guided hunt plus tag in Idaho. Res odds are good in some units (at least for me - I drew first time), rough in others. Don't know non-res odds but there are likely restrictions on number of non-res tags. Some call Idaho a blackmail state - you have to buy non-res license to apply.

Check with me mid Oct to see how it went. We're filming so I hope I get somethin'. ( ... going unguided with a STP friend or two.)
