I'm looking at buying a baby Glock, which is the smallest of the family, for concealed carry (which is legal) but I was wondering what are the differences in size performance, manf. variations, types of ammo variations, etc. between the .40 cal and the 10mm.

And which one would you choose?

I'd probably go with the 40 if for no other reason than the 10mm is going to be harder to control in such a small frame size. Plus 10mm tends to be more expensive to shoot and harder to find, although it is a more powerful cartridge.

By "baby" glock, I assume your considering the 29 and 27. Have you held these guns before? For even medium sized hands, most folks don't feel comfortable holding these guns. One thing you can do that helps is put on a pearce clip extension. It will extend the grip a bit giving more meat to hold on to.

If your into glock for concealed carry, definitely look at the 36 "slimline 45", its hard to find, but is also well suited for concealment given its thin profile.

Is this your first concealed carry gun purchase? If so, American Rifleman had an excellent article earlier this year on what to consider.

Since my original post I purchased the .40cal glock 27. I'm definelty going to pick up some mag extensions. Right now i'm carrying a 15 rd mag from a glock 23 but it doesn't fit flush but does give more to hold onto. I haven't decided between an in-the-pants holster or an inverted ankle holster that also holds spare clip.

Id say 40 just because I nothing about the 10mm.

Owned a Glock 23 for a few years, but sold it last summer. Glocks are great guns and mine was flawlessly reliable. I just hated the poor balance of the gun. Too top heavy and frame light making for stiff recoil with a full power 155 gr Speer Gold Dot .40SW. Even a cop friend of mine who shot it said that it seemed like the gun just want's to jump right out of your hands when you shoot it.

I've owned a couple other .40's in a Beretta 96FS and Sig P229. For some reason these other guns just balance better in .40 SW. Overall I've been very impressed with the cartridge :thumbsup1:

I'm full time L.E., firearms instructor and GLOCK armoror. While I'm not a huge fan of GLOCK they are a fine weapon and just about as idiot proof for anyone. I agree that the 40 cal is snappyer than the 9mm and even the 45 ACP. It is a good compromise of calibers tho. Baby GLOCKs area a pin in the butt because there so darned cut up. I wish they would make a GLOCK with the grip of 23 and the barrel of a baby. anyhow best of luck.

When the 10mm first came out it was considered a little to hot, and was being downloaded to compensate. S&W and Olin I think put there heads together and designed the .40 to what was being loaded in 10mm. Same bang in a smaller package (case/powder) with the same bullet. I believe it all started when the FBI was looking for a caliber that would work through heavy clothing, and put a suspect down quick. They wanted to standardize what agents carried after the shoot-out in Florida that several movies were made about.
Ultimately they decided against the 10mm and went with the new .40. I might be a little messed up on the details, but in the ballpark.
I'd go with the .40 also.

The absolute best handgun I have ever had or shot is the S & W 4006, what a sweet gun! Perfect for my big hand, but best of all the .40 S & W is quiet, accurate, powerful, and very little muzzle jump. In short the best overall handgun round I have found.

.40 S&W, definitely. For basic self-defense use it is better than the 10 for a couple of reasons. Probably most important, because ammo is much more widely available and less expensive. Also, less issues with excessive penetration and recoil. These issues would not matter if the 10 was dramatically better at stopping an assailant, but it isn't.

If you want a round for defense against bears and lions when hunting then the 10 would be the better choice between these two, but the best choice would be neither. For that purpose get yourself a .357 mag, or better yet a .44.

I own a G29 10mm and is quite comfortable even without mag extensions I have also owned the G22 40. For personell defense who is going to argue over a few dollars compared to a life of a loved one lot of ammo avaliable over internet and even high grade a sporting stores i would go 10MM all the way also Buffalo bore ammo is great to shoot in the G29

The 10mm was born from the FBI's research after the Miami -Dade shooting in 1986 where agents went against determined and well armed bank robbers and died tragically as a result of the poor performance of the 9mm. The 10 MM was general issue for only a short time as recoil was difficult to manage and penetration excessive. If I were looking for a back up gun in the hunting field I would choose the 10 mm as it is balistically very similar to the 41 magnum revolver cartridge. In a gun meant for concealment I would easily opt for the 40 as it has far less recoil and penetration, holds more ammunition and has a smaller grip frame..
