| That third pic looks like a pretty healthy bear. Is it the same bear as the first pic? :thumbsup1: I am so unprepared for this hunting season. I have to get my hands on some bait if I'm going to start this bear season off right. |

| Just saw a pic of a 500 lb Washington bear that was missing it's front foot from a snare. |

| Nail are you serious cause I've been using the same stuff for the past 2 years. That cotton candy smell along with the rasp jelly powder is a killer combo. |

Hey Billy, you sure it was not from a leg hold trap that the bear lost it's foot?
Never seen 1 lost from a snare. |

| If a bear was to break the snare from the tree it's tied to . It's very likely that the snare would stay on the foot and eventually it would loose the foot . The foot would swell below the snare . There is also a chance that the bear would keep trying to get the snare off it's foot and release the lock ,and off comes the snare . I always double up on the cable fastners and haven't lost 1 in all my years of snaring bears .. |

Nope, not a leg hold. The Aldrich snare was very popular here on the West Coast for many decades. It is still used in damage control and in some research and every once in a while a bear is killed missing a front foot. I know two guys that have shot bears like that and here is a pic of a large WA boar that was recently killed. Notice it is missing it's left front paw. The area that this bear was killed has historically had tons of bears and bear damage that is mostly controlled by dogs and snares.

Hi,
Just a curiosity question regarding bear snaring. Would a bear purposely chew their own leg off to escape from a snare like a coyote might do? We can not snare or use bait in Arizona, but I came across a snare like the two you have photographed in a deep oak covered canyon several years ago. I always wondered what it was for. Thanks. |

| I have never heard of a bear chewing of their foot to escape . But , I guess anything is possibable ............ I have snared dozens of bears and all feet in tact ... We did get one last fall with a broadhead embeded in it's spine . |
