Hi folks, here's a couple of pictures of a couple of problem preditors that are causing chaos in Namibia and Southern Africa generally right now - Hyaena and Jackals.

Smile Please - just shy of 70kg's!

Not quite cunning enough this time!

The problem is partially due to the very high numbers of antelope over the last few years as a result of the decent rains. Kudu numbers grew amazingly, as did Gemsbok and Springbok and with lots of local game, nobody really noticed just how many there were - until now.

This last winter saw anthrax and rabies really knock down the antelope numbers in Southern Africa - a fair bit of carrion was soon disposed of, but now that the game numbers have dropped, stock losses are much more obvious - for example. One of my farms lost 75 of their 85 Gemsbok in under 3 months this year to a single pack, and another, Stillerus, is loosing 4 head of cattle per night right now to a pack of hyaena thought to be 17 strong.

Looks like I'll be back in Etosha sooner than I though as things with hyaena and jackal can only get worse!

So, if you're visiting Africa this year (or next) please try and shoot some Outcasts while you're there - it's hard hunting, can be a bit dangerous too, but it's huge fun and your efforts will really help!

Cheers all!
