WASHINGTON (AP) -- Paris Hilton's mother doesn't share John McCain's sense of humor.

McCain, the Republican presidential candidate, said last week that his campaign ad mocking Democrat Barack Obama with images of Hilton and singer Britney Spears was part of an attempt to inject humor into the presidential race.

On Sunday, Hilton's mother, Kathy Hilton, a McCain donor, registered her disapproval.

''It is a complete waste of the country's time and attention at the very moment when millions of people are losing their homes and their jobs,'' Kathy Hilton said in a short article posted on the liberal Huffington Post Web site. ''And it is a completely frivolous way to choose the next president of the United States.''

The ad plays on Obama's popularity by dismissing him as a mere celebrity, like Hilton and Spears. The Obama campaign has said the ad is proof that McCain would rather launch negative attacks than debate important issues.

McCain on Friday denied that his campaign had taken a negative turn, saying, ''We think it's got a lot of humor in it, we're having fun and enjoying it.''

Kathy Hilton, however, was unpersuaded, calling the ad ''a complete waste of the money John McCain's contributors have donated to his campaign.''

Kathy Hilton and her husband donated a total of $4,600 to McCain's campaign earlier this year.

Kathy probably also wants her name back. Hilton used to be synonymous with grandeur, now I suppose it's been hijacked to mean neurosis.

Personally, I think it's the height of hypocrisy. It didn't bother her when her daughter put out a sex tape on the internet, gyrated in a swimsuit on a soapy car to sell hamburgers, or spent time in jail for a DUI. But this is offensive to her?

Uh oh, Now Paris has her own video response, calls McCain a wrinkled old grey haired guy, suggests her own energy policy that sounds amazingly coherent.

Paris is a part of American culture I've missed out on, looks good in a bathing suit but she seems to be getting a little long in the teeth herself.

It is not hypocritical for her to criticize McCain for how he used her campaign donation. I don't blame her for being upset. I would be too if I contributed to someone's campaign and they turned around and portrayed my daughter in a negative light.

There are lots of other celebrities that he could have used - why pick a supporter's daughter regardless of her past behavior.

I don't think you repay someone's support in this manner.

It was because Paris and the other one have a rep displaying themselves in public. It's a sex and black man thing. Look at the video. Two phalic symbols in the first 10 seconds, why? It's like popcorn being shown during the movie at the theater. I thought the videos were masterfull. Negative campaigning with mistruths etc has been proven to work. His campaign manager is going to look like a low life when this is over, but he's making the best effort to help his candidate to win. Anyone else would do the same things.
