Obama’s Symbolic Importance: Barack Beleives The Hype

WASHINGTON POST - Perhaps he's beginning to believe the hype.
In his closed door meeting with House Democrats this evening, presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama delivered a real zinger. According to a witness, he was waxing lyrical about last week's trip to Europe, when he concluded, "this is the moment, as Nancy [Pelosi] noted, that the world is waiting for."
The 200,000 souls who thronged to his speech in Berlin came not just for him, he told the enthralled audience of congressional representatives.
"I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions," he said.

I'd have to agree. Most Euros I talk to really like and respect America and Americans. Our culture is familiar to many through our media. We are known for being honest forthright and generous. They remember WWII and the Marshal plan, the Berlin air lift and believe it or not many are familiar with and appreciative of our Constitution and Declaration of Independance. They wish again for the day America was a leader and moral compass in the world.
They really don't know much about Obama but they are hopefull that we will return to being a country that respects the rule of law and honors our constitution. I think they were celebrating for us more than him. |

| I don't know. If I was Europe and looked at his experience and rhetoric, I'd be worried. |

| I am glad to hear that Europeans are familiar with or constitution and Declaration Of Independence because a surprising number of Americans have no clue as to what is written in these two most important documents the world has ever witnessed. One "man on the street" interviewee said that the Declaration Of Independence was the "amendment" making the 4th of July a national holiday!!! ::-k |

| People of the Titanic...now is our time We can come together and repair the damage to our ship's hull as North and South came together to repair the damage to our nation's soul. Follow me, because I argued against icebergs when we began this journey. The iceberg is not the enemy; we failed the iceberg through our arrogance and the use of fossil fuels. Join me, because I have the gift of perfect hindsight. Together, we can overcome the flood cascading over the bulkheads and reach toward a brighter future of giant airships that rise above the sea on vast reservoirs of environmentally safe hydrogen. Join me, people of the Titanic...and not only will we repair this ship -- we'll transform the world. |

Very good Ex, I think you struck the proper balance between glowing hyperbole and worthless rhetoric.
I guess we could only hope that Obama and crew would fly off in a hydrogen filled air ship.
Now SoCo, I know your very excited about Obama's ascendancy to the throne, but you know what they say about counting chickens before they hatch. This is going to be a tight race and I don't think Obama's victory is assured.
Obama even seems pretty good at burning his own bridges with no help from McCain. For instance the telecom immunity bill...

Given enough time, he might just blast away at enough of his constituency entirely of his own volition. America does not want a far-left president and Obama keeps tripping up when he tries to make his message more centrist w/o pissing off the most fanatical of his horde. |

Thanks. You know, I think it reads best if you scroll down enough so you can see the picture while you read the text. :P
In all seriousness, I think as a general rule there's a limit to how many times a man can be told he's God before he starts to believe it. |
