| I drew a 44/45 unguided tag2nd rifle elkMB. Anyone familiar with Pecos Wilderness? also I'm looking at 6a as a future hunt, any hints? I'd love to get a chance at a30" muley, and a elk tag(cow) ? I picked areas that are not known for BC Bulls on purpose, less hunter pressure. Or should I put in for HD hunts anyway, a friend drew 34 1st time. Hank |

Hank,
That is a good draw. First question, Do you have horses? This wilderness are is tough country however, you can still take a quality bull if are willing to pack it out. Unit 6a in the Jemez Mountians is a quality unit but it is a tough draw given that theri are only 100 tags for both rifle hunts. Bow hunts are easier to draw for this unit. The draw in New Mexico is random, I used to have the same mindset regarding units to put in for. I used to put in for the units that people didnt put in for and the quality of hunting is not as good but now a day's I put in quality units for all three choices and I have drawn out every year. This year I drew for unit 16A for elk which was my second choice and unit 2B third rifle for deer which was also my second choice and the most sought after tag in the state for deer. It all depends on where your application # falls in the draw. Good luck and hope this helps Put in for what you want |

| Thank's for the help lovato18, I got smart and have a local outfitter who will help if I need. I figured it would be a tough hunt and I'll have to pack away from the trails,etc...but NM I just love it. Another guy I talked to said same thing, just put in for HD and you'll get one sooner than later. I hunt deer in the Sierra Nevada Mtns. and I figured I might have edge over others that aren't used to being up over 10K and I have been to both Pecos and Jemez area's , just not in the last 6yrs. Every year I look the elk #'s just keep getting better, how does it look to try for big muley and elk in same trip, it wouldn't need to be in same unit. I've heard the mulies are coming back in some areas but not others, and the G&F info appears to be better on elk herds than deer. thank's , Hank |
