Just found out I got my wy antelope tag for unit 72. Nobody in my group has ever been to this area (just west of casper), so any info anyone can give would be great. We are going to do it without an outfitter so now the research continues. This will be my first western big game hunt and to say I am excited would be an understatement. Thanks in advance Brandon

First off Congrats on the tag I usually hunt unit 25 never hunted 72.

I would start by contacting the Game and Fish http://gf.state.wy.us/
get info from them on public access land owners who allow hunting ect for free or tresspass fee's make calls early as possible the later it gets the less info and help you will recieve

Contact the local warden for the area and ask the same questions sometime different people will give you more or less info

There are several walk in hunting areas (private land for Public access) you will want to view these carefully they should be updated by July 10th and can be viewed online or later in July you can get the book from Game and fish these walk in areas can be good do not over look them

Order BLM and County maps for your area http://gf.state.wy.us/download.....08NR48.pdf

If you do not have good Binos and spotting scope buy them or borrow them you will want them good glass makes a huge difference in judging animals and saves alot of walking also a good tripod with adapters for binos and spotter

Invest in a hydration bladder that you can wear on your back it gets hot and tiresome chasing goats on foot you need to stay hydrated

You may want to consider shooting sticks or a bipod your preference antelope can get spooky and shots are anywhere from close to several hundred yards
so a steady rest is a must

dont forget to bring a good camera to take pics with so you can post them after your hunt

Good Luck

Thanks for the info. I already talked to the biologists they recommended 72 and gave me info on it already. I also already have BLM maps and am working on tracing the outline of the unit onto the maps as we speak. Also working on getting al the gear together. Now have to find a place to stay if anyone knows of a cheap hunter friendly hotel in the area. Thanks

Contact the Chamber of commerce for the

area they can give you reccomendations on a few different things. Other than that you're all set if you have maps and talked witht he bioligist and are getting the gear needed.

How did you find out about being drawn for an antelope tag already? We applied for deer and antelope and the scheduled draw date wasn't until July 3rd.

Disregard my last post as I went on Wyoming's F&G site and saw the results. I was surprised to see that the drawing was held already. Well I guess I'll be off for deer and antelope for sure now.

As far as accomodations go you better hurry. All of the motels in Lusk are already booked. I ended up getting a room but at a premium......Next time I will book ahead. If you hunting closewr to one of the big cities you probably won't have a problem. I could have booked a room in Douglas but it would have meant driving close to an hour both ways and with fuel rising that could get costly..... YH
