I'm looking at potentially buying a new muzzle loader and am wondering what ones to look at. I'm not looking to spend a lot of money as I am new to BP hunting and don't have a lot to spend :) but I want something that is reliable and will take down an Elk.
Been looking at Traditions rifles and would like opinions on the deerhunter, and frontier line as well as the hawken and kentuky lines (what are the pro's and cons of each.) |

Hi Rifleman!
I had a .50 Deerhunter for everal years. It is a very handy rifle with good accuracy. You can both use PRB and conicals/sabbots. Furthermore there is a model in .54. That'll be adequate for elk, even with PRB.
If you want to spend abit more money take a Lyman Trade rifle. I have a .50 Cabelas Hawken (also from Lyman), a Lyman GPR cal. 50 and a CVA buckhorn inliner .50. All good shooters and priceworth.

thanks for that info Kirrmeister.
I was under the impression that Utah would only allow a traditional (side lock) BP rifle but I just had a look at the proc and it doesn't say anything about not being able to use an inline? All it says is the gun must only be able to be loaded through the muzzle. Maybe I just got Idaho and Utah confused...does anyone know if there is a law against inline Black Powder guns in Utah? |

Hello again!
I use and recommend a single trigger. Because you are faster and it is more safe. My CVA buckhorn inliner has very nice trigger pull weight, ideal for hunting, the Deerhunter had also. By the way the CVA buckhorn is also a good suggestion, costs only $ 190 from Cabelas, so much cheaper as the Deerhunter.

| thanks, I'll keep that CVA in mind as well. At this point if I end up going traditional I think you have me leaning toward the Lyman, however this evening I'm going to a local store to compare so hopefully I'll come away a little smarter. :) |

well that trip was a bust, nobody around here carries Lyman or Traditions and i could only find one place with a CVA (Kodiak) so I looked at it...nice rifle, but I also found out that there are some Rifle (any weapon) tags left here so I bought those and will probably wait a while now before buying a new BP.

No problem. But I thought always that you can get ML all over the USA. Seems not so.
Have a look at the Regions-threads and there at Europe. Have posted a pic of my latest ML hunting success.

well, yeah you can get ML all over the USA and I could drive about 60 miles and likely find a Traditions or Lyman dealer but the ones closer to me don't carry those brands...I was just looking local over the weekend and that's what I meant by "nobody around here".
