Anybody tried either the winchester short magnums or super short magnums? If so what are your thoughts or experience with them?

I though I have no experience with them, I am not sure of there purpose. I understand that they imitate their "big brothers" but in a short action rifle. I have both long and short action rifles and really don't see a difference in cycling either one. That is not to say I don't see a diff. between my 300 RUM and my 22 mag. but the diff. between my 300 RUM and my 308 WIN. is very small. I bought the RUM because I wanted to be different. If I was trying to choose between the 300 WSM and the 300 Win Mag. I would still pick the 300 Win Mag.

You hit the nail on the head, Chester. I don't have any experience with these cartridges either, but from what I have read, a "short action" doesn't seem enough of a reason to switch. I'm having a hard time understanding the hype...

Some literature I have read suggests that WSM and WSSM rounds are more accurate than their regular magnum counterparts. However it seems to me that the action length probably has little to do with this and more to do with improved bore and bullet quality....

I have just purchased a a winchester Modle 70 FTW in 300 WSM and I realy like it.And today I'm getting a 270 WSM in a super sporter(plain jane the gun weighs in @ 6 lbs-12oz.The advantage is like having 300 win mag carbine. They shoot flat, hit hard and are easy to carry.I also have a 300 ultra mag and it is about twice as punishing to shoot.

Have you seen tighter patterns (more accuracy) with the WSM, BBJ, compared to the ultra mag? Just curious...

To tell you the truth,no I have not noticed any diffrence in the grouping.
I sight all my guns in at 100 yds. to be 2in high. With all my guns if I can't cover 3 shots with a quarter at 200 yds I sell them.

Bit Master,
I didn't buy the 270wsm,I went ahead and bought another 300wsm.
I shot it this afternoon at home and I was grouping 3/4in.@ 100yds with Winchester failsafes 180gr.I think I can cut that down to 1/2in groups with 165gr Noslers. Not bad for a rifle that weighs only 7 1/2 lbs total package.
My featherweight shoots a smidge over 1/2in with factory PowerPoints 180gr.
Let me know if this helped.

Thanks for the info BBJ, it does help, and it sounds like you are pleased with the short magnums.

It is amazing how light rifles can be these days. 6-7 lbs is lighter than the heavier portable computers these days!

BBJ I was wondering where you purchased your 300 wsm and how much did you give for it? I got mine at wal-mart and for less than MSRP.

Tom,
I bought mine at Scheele's All Sports here in Montana.
I know they are cheaper @ Wall -Mart,they didn't feel the same.Plus I got a sling, rings, bases and 4 boxes of ammo in the deal.I think they are $389.98 @ wall-mart (there is no tax in Montana)

I have a Remington Model Seven in 300 Rem SA Ultra Mag and have just started working up loads for it. Can't say yet what it might ultimately do but I do believe that shorter actions have a better accuracy potential given the fact that they will be more rigid. Mine shoots good so far with factory ammo and the few handloads I have tried but accuracy is not stellar. I think I will get a lot better group by the time I work up the "right" load.

I had a .300 WSM in a Browning A-bolt. I only sold it for monetary reasons. Mine was super-accurate out of the box, and the kick was decent. They might be more accurate, but the average (and probably the majority of experienced)shooters would never be able to tell the difference. If you already have a .300 mag or a 7mm mag, there's probably no reason to switch. If you're going out and getting your first magnum, it's a decent idea, especially for a lightweight rifle. Mine weighed less than 8 lbs. with scope and all. I like the WSM idea. The WSSMs however, really don't make a lot of sense to me. I can do the same things that the .243 WSSM can do in my 6mm Rem. I would rather have seen a 264 or a 338 WSM.

Ive always wanted a .243 WSSM but the first one I found was on the day I went and put my .280 in the lay away for xmas and it costed about $200 more. Ive been told the WSM's kick like mules and other people say they dont kick at all. So Id go with a .243 WSSM, low recoil, more than enough power for deer.

I have a 270WSM and have shot the 300WSM. Personaly, I like the WSM line. The guns that I have shot have all been extremly accurate. My 270 shot 3/4" groups the first time I shot it and got smaller after I got it "broke in". Recoil I think is differient with each cartrige. The 270WSM is close if not more than a regular 270win. but the 300WSM seems more like a 30-06 than a 300win. Is it reason to sell your gun and go out and buy a WSM? No. But... is it a good excuse to go out and buy another gun? Oh yeah! All of us need a good excuse like that. I just read where Winchester has the 25WSSM in their lineup for 2004. The "super short mag" is supposed to have the same velocity as a 25-06. I wish they had made it a regular "short mag" and pushed the velocity up around a 257weatherby but oh well, should be interesting anyhow. I guess this just leaves the door open for Remington.
