Hi,
I'm thinking of buying a rifle that is adverstised as a "London Guns"
FN Mauser. The rifle is stocked in a full length walnut stock (but has a schaebel part on it) and is distincly European in look and configuration. Scope is a Hertzel and Ruess in QD mounts and calibre is 9.3x62mm.

I am trying to find out a bit more about the manufacturer (or should I say customiser) of this rifle.

By the name you would think that it's a UK company, but the internet finds a London Guns Company in Santa Babara, CA.

Can anyone verify this and tell me anything about this company and the quality of the guns they have made?

Thanks

George

Does anyone (local) know if they are still around. I emailed them last week and have not recieved a reply.

I'm unfamiliar with these guns but I'm familiar with the FN mauser actions. After wwII they made a good deal of actions and sold them commercially. I believe weatherby used some of these actions to make some of his early guns, although older weatherbys used war production mauser actions. Sears and Roebuck, along with a lot of other catalogs and department stores used to sell FN Herstal action based guns.

Based on what you have written, I'm guessing that London Guns was a custom gun maker that imported some of these FN actions then made the guns to someones spec. No different than having a custom gun made on a Remington 700 action today.

Thanks Bitmasher,
I had just assumed that an FN Mauser action was a post WW2 ex-mil mauser.
I had totally forgot that FN also made commercially available hunting rifles.
I'm starting to like this thing more and more.

I am very familiar with London Guns. Their shop was in Santa Monica. The owner retired in about '86 or so. I remember when he retired. He moved out to Santa Barbara and I guess he's still doing something out there but I doubt it's much of anything.

It was a great shop in it's time. They sold only high end guns with a lean toward African Rifles. In fact, I remember, back in those days, before the resurgence in classic African Rifles Cartridges, you had to buy some cases one at a time and they were lathe turned. Cost about $125.00 each in 1980's dollars.

Anyway, they had a very good gunsmith as well as an engraver. I purchased several guns from them including my first Steyr SSG. I had several guns worked on and a couple of very serious engraving jobs. They did great.

I'd look over the gun carefully just like any gun but I sure wouldn't be scared of an FN Mauser from London Guns. They were great people.

Hope this helps.
Cheers.
