Late winter storm produces snow, ice on I-84

A winter storm in June has produced snow and ice on Interstate 84 between Pendleton and La Grande, including near white-out conditions in the Meacham area.
The Oregon Department of Transportation issued a snow hazard warning this morning because of the late snow storm. Drivers can expect snow and icy conditions on Cabbage Hill and some areas will require chains for vehicles that are towing or that weigh more than 10,000 pounds.
ODOT may change the chain requirement at anytime due to weather conditions. For updated road and weather information, drivers can check TripCheck.com on the Web or to call 511 or (800) 977-6368. Outside of Oregon, travelers can call (503) 588-2941.
The National Weather Service office in Pendleton issued a snow advisory early this morning for the Blue Mountains that will stay in effect until 10 p.m. today.
The weather service's advisory said the southern Blue Mountains can expect 3-5 inches of snow, and the northern Blues could get 4-6 inches.
Some of the higher peaks, from 4,000-6,000 feet high, could get as much as 8 inches of snow.
The snow between 4,000-5,000 feet could melt by afternoon.
The weather service also issued a hazardous weather outlook for most of Eastern Oregon, including Pendleton and Hermiston, and there is a frost advisory in effect from 2 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday for the Blue Mountains and much of Wallowa County. |
