What big game rifle did you all first cut your teeth with?
Did you start with a smaller caliber and work up or just jump into the bigger calibers? |

My first rifle was a .30-06. I bought it when I lived in North Carolina and loaded it with 150 grain bullets for the deer back there.

My first deer rifle was also a 30-06. It was a used remington model 721 bolt action that my dad bought for me when I started hunting. It has acounted for probably 90% of all the whitetails I have taken with rifle. Although I have accumulated other big game rifles over the years, it is still my favorite and will always be my goto deer rifle. I also shoot 150 gr bullets (remington corelokts) because that is what it likes best (

My first was a Cooey 12 gauge single shot followed by a 303 brit Lee Enfield. Nothing high tech at all. Hunting was so simple back then.

303 brits. are more common up here than black flys. You can pick them up for next to nothing so they are an obvious choice to start with and are more than up to the task.

my first big game rifle was and still is my rem.700 2506. I have used a 220 swift for antelope, and a 7mm mag. for deer and one antelope but I still use my 2506 the most.

my first big game rifle was a savage model 99 250-3000 lever action. Being left handed a lever action is about all I used in my starten days. Then a win. 30-30. That gun has killed 36 muley bucks and three bull elk in Colorado. I now use a 7mm MAG.

My first big game rifle was a Winchester Model 94 lever action 30-30 with out a scope. This was a great gun to learn with. My grandpa gave me this gun. I now use a 300 Winchester Magnum Model-70 Classic in matte SS. But one of my favorite guns is my Winchester 22 semi-auto long rifle. This was grandmothers my barn yard gun. She would use it for chickens, squirrles and even quail. It's a lot of fun to target shoot or plink can's with.

Marlin 30-30 open sights for deer. Didn't grow up hunting anything else but I later expanaded my horizons and picked up a 30-06 for elk and antelope. Now I mostly use my 7mm rem mag.

My first rifle was when I was eleven it was savage 32-40 hex barrel deer engraved on one side and a hound on the other side.Made the mistake of my life traded it with an other hunter when I was young for another rifle that was much lighter for dogging. It didn't have a lot of punch but was it acurate. should never of let this older gentleman talk me into it.This happened over thirty years ago and still bothers me.I paid ten dollars for the 32-40 and got a brand new gun worth 300 at the time.

I started with a 20 ga Remington Model 11 since I lived in a slug-only area at the time. According to the serial # it was built in 1941, but had spent most of its life in my uncle's closet by the time I got my hands on it. I had a ball with the gun and got my first deer with it, but when I left home Dad gave it back to my uncle, where it's spent the last 20 years in the closet again. If there was any way I could get my hands on it again, I'd certainly jump on it. It's too nice of a gun to sit idle.
