well, finally gonna get to it...
i have been thinking about setting a 243 up for a while.
looking to use as a primary coyote rig, but may use for a deer here and there as well as ghogs.
starting off, i bought a 243 remmy 700 adl, just slapped her in a hs precision stock, she wears irons, and i have a set of luppy qd bases to put on her.
she's got an ugly wart on the side of her bolt...lol
that and a finish will be taken care of soon i hope.
looking for factory ammo input as well as glass opinions. |

When I first got into coyote hunting a Winchester Model 70 Classic Featherweight is what I bought and I'll go over a few things I've learned.
My barrel and most 243's have a 1 in 10 twist rate which are better for heavier 95 and 100 gr bullets. Now these are primarily deer and antelope sized bullets and when used on coyotes leave devastating holes. Not an issue if you're not saving hides.
However, I've found when I have attempted to shoot lighter bullets intended for varmints my accuracy goes to **** (large groups). This would matter if you got a shot at a nice bobcat and wanted to save the pelt as the heavier bullet again will be more destructive.
I have since purchased a 22-250 Savage Model 10 Predator, but still love my 243 and will be using it for antelope this year and it took two deer last year for me. Excellent one shot kills on those two deer.
On scopes the Nikon Buckmaster 4.5 to 14 is what I had on the 243 and now on the 22-250 and I can't complain. It will run you about $300. I put a Luepold Riflemen 3x9 on the 243. |

I shot a coyote with my .243 using a sierra game king 100 gr bullet and it left about a quarter size exit wound. Hardly an entrance wound to speak of.
I have a Nikon Monarch 4-12 BDC reticle on it. I have used it to take coyote, deer and antelope. All one shot kills including the antelope at 253 yards.
I am using Nosler BT 95 gr bullets right now and found a load that gave me a 1/2 MOA at 100 yards. |
