I drew a Bull tag for archery in Unit 5B South and have never hunted the area. I have hunted 6A South for several years and would like any help offered.
Thanks. |

I'll be working on a cabin in that area this summer, I 'll keep you posted on any monsters. I have only hunted 5A early season in that area and the herds all hold fairly close to the rim. Scouting that area shouldn't be too tough if we can keep the fire season under control.
Good Luck! |

| Nice summer job location! I certainly would welcome any information. I hunted 5B north about 8 years ago for antelope and 6A south several times for cow only but never 5B south. I figure to start scouting late July after the rain starts to see if I can locate the major water ponds and wallows. Thanks, and good luck with the canin. |

JLS, are you the same JLS over on AZOD? If so, it's me ThunderDan.
I can give you some help in lower 5A. Send me a PM through either forum.

In comment to the first topic, youve hunted 6a before, if you study maps and such all you gotta do is follow your gut instinct as to where the elk would be it will be the same as 6a except you are one unit over.....its not rocket science!
elkhunter92: what time of the year are you hunting? are you hunting bull or cow? I know a place where youre hunting that you are guaranteed  to see cows and possibly a bull or two. How familiar are you with the area, It would be a waste to try explain it before knowing how well you know the area. Let me know.....
For either of you....Are you real hunters or road hunters? If your road hunters then Im wasting my "breath" here :=; . If you're the type who actually HUNTS then im more than happy to share info. :thumbsup1: |

I've never been drawn for 5B-S before but I've hunted with some friends in that unit and be ready to see some big bulls. I'd start scouting just west of Long Lake following FS 82 northwest (which is also the border of 5B-N and 5B-S). Anywhere between FS 82 and Hutch Mountain Lookout has some good bulls in it.
Good Luck! |

5B South is ny favorite unit! There is a place there we call elk highway...loaded with trails. I sat there one morning a couple years ago and, I am not kidding, heard non-stop bugling for about an hour. Bulls all over! Take road 93 in about 7 miles and hunt that area to your left. I just found this forum so I will have to look at my map to get more specific.
I am hunting 5B North this year for only the second time. ANY SUGGESTIONS? |

| Hey jeffstorck...Good unit! Someone else posted a topic with this same unit. I replied a couple areas to check out. It should be listed in the topic page. |

Yes I know; "its not rocket science". I have a job in Idaho and have been here since end of May and with gas what it is I cannot drive 3000 mile round trip for a weekend scouting. Was looking for some specific input so when I head out from here on Sept 7 I will have some idea of where to go. As for real vs. road hunter. Just guessing at your age I would expect that I have more miles on by boots than you have on your tires. Almost 70 and took up archery 15 years ago because gunning was to easy but I still love the chase and the outdoors. Thanks for the help. PS. There are no roads where this guy came from.

| I've hunted it for years and downed a 346 bull two years ago by archery. I would normally hunt of lake mary road mile marker 303. Go west in about 3 miles and take your pick. A great water hole back in a ways is two jims. Good luck. The unit has nice bull numbers, hot for the weather to cool, sometimes the rut starts late becuase of the heat. |
