Anyone used or have opinions on the 6.8 SPC in a AR-15. I am looking at purchasing one to use for deer. Seems to be a few different manufacturers out there for the AR in the 6.8. Seems like quite a nice caliber, accurate, light recoil, good BC and I guess if it is good enough for special forces duty it should be good enough for me.

My dad owns a nice AR in a .243 the rife is a Armalite Super Varmiter AR10T. He shoots deer of his deck past 400 yds all the time. A nice .243 would be my chioce for a AR hunting rifle.

I didn't realize the ar10 came in 243. I thought it was only 308. Did he have to rebarrel?

The 6.8SPC would be an excellent round in the ar15 platform. It would be my choice if we had that choice in Canada... which we don't.

Know and officer that carries one for his patrol rifle. He likes it. Recoil is not much more than the 223. Yet to see how it works on flesh. Belive Remington made some in the 700LTR. the write up I read had good reviews about it (then again whens the last time you read a bad write up?).

The 6.8 SPC is actually 270 caliber so you can use any bullet that is made for the 270 win, although 90-120 grains seems to be optimal for the rate of twist that is standard in most factory rifles.

Early reports about the 6.8 seemed to suggest that you could use standard 223 ar-15 mags with the 6.8. From experience I can say this is untrue, for anything more than a few rounds. You need to use 6.8 mags or buy followers and change over your 223 mags.

You might also look at the DPMS guns based off the LR-308. They are offering 260, 243, 6.5 Creedmor, and 308 chamberings. It is a heavier platform than the ar-15, but you can get a wider variety of cartridge chamberings.

Most magazines for rifles chambered for 6.8 won't allow the use of long heavey bullets unless you seat them deep in the case and sacrifice powder capacity so your limited to about 120 grains or less.
