i just purchased a chocolate lab pup and he will be 7 weeks next thursday. how soon should i start training my pup for bird hunting?

Welcome to BGH.
I haven't done a lab in a lot of years but as I recall I started them very young on simple obedience. A lab that doesn't mind is an out of control dog. I'd start with learning to walk on a lead, to sit and to come when called. Probably be a good idea to get yourself a 20' check cord too. 1/4th tight woven nylon and tie a brass snap on with a bowline knot. Gives the pup 40' to play in. When the pup get bigger, maybe three to three and a half mos, up the cord to 3/8th. |
