Been a purest ML guy for years. Have 3 rifles. A caplock I built from a CVA hawkin kit in highschool and 2 flintlocks (50 &45) and a Lymon Planes Pistol in 54 cal. Have shot nothing but 2 and 3 F, black powder and patched round balls.

Have been considering an inline for a few years now, you know somtimes you just NEED a new gun  . Well have been looking and compairing. Almost bought a Lyman Mustang but did not like the way it hung? Was very intreaged with the Savage 10-ML, a ML that can shoot black powder or any of its substitutes OR Smokeless powder (perfectly leagle in NYS). Using smokeless turns the gun into a "high pressure" gun something none of the other mfg's can claim. Has been a very hard gun to find. All the shops say I could order on (payment in advance) but I am not big on paying for a gun without holding it.

Was buy a new shop in the area I work in not to long ago and went in to check out the guns. There were 2 Savage 10-ML II on the rack! I bought the better looking one.

So, if you were to use smokeless powder would you be able to hunt a modern season or would you still be limited to a muzzleloader only. Here in washington we cant even use 209 primers none the less thats a good looking smoke pole

Here in NY you can use a ML during the ML season and during regular firearm season

Hi ADKBEAR,

have a CVA inliner in .50 which only works with bp and substitudes. Which smokeless powder does your inliner take and how is it loaded? Are there pellets or what and what bullets do you use? How much muzzle vel. do you get?

Regards

I am shooting IMR SR 4759 smokeless powder. Right now I am shooting 45 gr, measured our of a Lee dipper (so loading it in loose powder form, dumped right down the barrel). I use a Federal 209A primer. I am shooting 245gr Barnes Spitfire MZ bullets. They are a Semi Spritzer, boattail design all copper bullet.
I do not have a chronograph but am estimating that i am achieving about:
Speed 2400 fps
Energy 3020 fpe

I estimated these calcs from info on a web page dedicated to this gun http://www.sav10ml.com/pages/main.htm

The first time I shot it I used the after market sabots that Savage recomended and it was all over the place at 50 yds? All of Savages work ups had been done with Hornady SST bullets (that are not boat tail design). I contacted Barnes and gave them the low down. They were very prompt at getting back to me. The sabots that come with the Barns bullets I am using are designrd for the boat tail and they said that any other sabot would not stabilize the bullet. I rebore sighted the gun and the first 2 at 50 yds were touching each other one inch low. I raised things up and was driving tacks at 50 yds.
Now I need to set up my 100 and zero the gun in there and I am good to go :thumbsup1:

Hi ADKBEAR!

Thanks for the info!
Sounds realy impressive and similar to a cartridge gun. Did you already use it for hunting? If not what do you plan to hunt with?

Just got it recently so the only thing I have shot is paper so far.
Will be using it on deer (whitetail) and black bear here in New York. We have 2 weeks of (special) muzzle loading seasons. One in the North that is early (mid Oct right before reg rifle season) and one in the South that is late (mid Dec after the reg season).
Might be looking at a Moose hunt up in Canada in the next year or two. Maybe if I could find a muzzloading hunt up there that would work out?

ADKBEAR,

the last 14 days I was on vacancy in Sweden with the family, not for hunting. But the guy who leased the wooden hut to us, a very friendly swedman, offered a hunting possibility to me on his 100 hectars (300 acres) property. There is only forest with moose, red deer, roe and boar. Won't cost anything except the journey and the leasing fee for the hut ( € 270/week) and the swedish hunting licence (€ 30/year). The bad thing is Sweden don't allow any use of ML, but I'll take bp cartridge gun.

Regards
