Hunting Black Bear over bait, do you prefer to hunt from a tree stand or on the ground?
How far do you sit from your bait? |

I have killed two from a tree stand (bow)and seven from the ground(gun). I prefer being on the ground, I like to be about 50 yds or more from the bait if gun hunting. With in 20 yds if bow hunting from a tree stand. I was only 8 yds away for my longbow kill from a tree stand. How dense the cover is usually determines the distance more so than the method.

I've been on the ground, no bait, but would like to get a portable tree stand for this year. The stand I have is a two man latter system. Not very mobile.

I have done both, I like the ground hunting, it is more in your face type hunting. Also I prefer a handgun than any thing else. :thumbsup1:

I have killed 3 from tree stand and quite a few on ground and also stalking on beach or in woods--I prefer stalk & shoot to bait but some places it is necessary--i do not like being in tree but it gives amuch better view.

I wonder how the old timers hunted over bait. Before tree stands.

We neve had any tree stands in AK-- It was enough work to get bait in by snomachine or 4 wheeler and on your back--usually had some down trees or brush for blind.

I am hunting with a .270 shooting either a 150 or 160 grain bullet. Good enough for bears from a tree stand?

Welcome North Idaho Hunter,I prefer .35 caliber plus for mature Black Bear. Lots of people use a .270, you just have to be very selective and accurate with your shot. No margin for error.
