Hunting the Greenwater Provincial Park area of Saskatchewan this May 11-18. Based on last few years, what week would you veterans project the black bears to be out of hibernation? I'm told last week of April, 1st week of May, which would be ideal for us. Black flies out that early? Thanks in advance.

Well Eagle 5, as a fairly new bear hunter (8 yrs & 3 bears) I must say that the local weather has THE influence. Like the Second Coming, everyone has opinions but each local area & the local weather conditions call the shots. All I can I say is that scouting/snooping is the only method to produce the answers to your questions. Here in W WA the Spring is on & off again & putt'in your time in the woods is the only way to get a handle on it. Good luck!

Depends where you are. The further north you go, the later the bears will stay denned. In some southern areas of the States, I've heard guys say they don't den up at all. I'm in northern Ontario and our bears are out early April, often with some snow still on the ground. Sask would be similar depending on Latitude.

My outfitter in SASK says they've been out and around for 2 weeks +, but only now starting to hit the baits pretty good. Since I hunt next week, maybe our timing is SPOT ON! :thumbsup1:

Two weeks ago when I was out scoutting turkey aqnd shed hunting abear came out to me at about 20 yards looked like a fairly young boar 2-3 years old
mabe 150 - 200 lbs . So I would say the bears are out of hybernation. We live at the 45 th parallel.
By the way I located some Turkeys and found the left shed off a moose two feet from base to tip.

I'll tell you what. we had a foot of snop in the mountains last week. The snow pack is at record levels, so I don't think the bears will be out here any time soon, at least up high. That is the reason I did not put in for a spring bear tag this year. Still too much snow for where I wanted to hunt. Just my $.02.

I'll be heading up to Sask on June 7th. I'm hunting in the Dore Lake area and there's still snow on the ground and the lake is still frozen except around the edges. The bear are just coming out now. There is a significant warming trend going on and the everthing is melting. Everything seems to be running late this year.
