I was lukcy enough to get a Unit 9 Bull Tag (Nov. 18-24) and wanted to know if anyone out there has any tips/hot spots for finding a good bull once they get pushed into the national park. Any help would be appreciated as I am in the Coast Guard and won't be able to get out and do much pre season scouting.

Another non-resident who drew 1 of the trophy elk tags-then asks for info for a unit he knows nothing about! Check with Taulman-USO Outfitters-I'm sure they will guide you for a pricey fee! :[-X : :x

I am from Arizona. I grew up there for 18 years and am serving my country in the Coast Guard. I still have my residency in Arizona, I just happen to be stationed in California. I simply asked for some help in hopes that someone might be understanding of my situation. Apparently not.

I sure hope others are more helpful--especially to someone serving our country--than what I read on this thread.

Anyways, I hope this doesn't insult your intelligence, Dreamin, but here's the link on Game & Fish for Unit 9 information. I apologize if you already looked at it, but I thought it might give you a start if you didn't... You're probably looking for a little more specific information.

Thanks for the tip. I checked it out and it does provide some help. I've hunted in the area before, but it was in September for antelope and in the late 80's, so I figured it couldn't hurt to ask. If you come across any other info, I gladly listen. Thanks again!

Your hunt is truly a trophy hunt, but be fooled that it will be easy! The elk in this area can be huge, but they are also hunted pretty heavily before and during the hunt you were drawn for. A lot of the archery hunters in this unit have luck when they work the water. However, in November you're gonna have snow and thus, water holes aren't really your best bet. I would get in around Red Butte, find a nice view and work the optics. But beware of this area too, it is all wilderness area i.e., no quads, trucks, etc. You better bring plenty of help or your salt and pepper to have an elk roast right on the spot! A word to the wise, it will snow, it will get muddy, so make sure your 4x4 is running good. Good luck, let us know how you do.

Try the American canyon area, it is pretty country and lots of elk. :thumbsup1:

Congrats on your Unit 9 bull elk tag. That's a great unit for bulls, especially during the rifle hunt you have. You won't have a problem if you hunt smarter, not harder. Focus on tree line areas meeting big clearings at first light, and near small crevices/arroyos 1/2 mile deep into the trees from the clearings during the late afternoon and eves. Also focus around undulating knolls dropping into arroyos offering several escape lanes. They'll be bedded during most daylight hours during your hunt, so glass slow and hard for shadowy sillohettes in the shade of trees and rocky ledges.

I for one would like to not see born2bewhining posting again. That jerk has plastered his negative attitude over most of the various hunting forums. I have not seen a single post from that worm that has benifitted one single person.

Get over the draw results, they are done.

I am an AZ resident. I don't blame those who where drawn and neither should you.

If you don't have anything positive to add then please don't post.

By they way, 30 incher, my son has cow elk tag in November, PM me and I will send you some info.
