Thanks for this forum, i have learned alot from reading some of the posts.

I'm going to S-Africa for the first time in a few months, i'm looking into buying a 30.06 for my first hunt, and then later on move on to a 470.

My first hunt is going to be the regular stuff: Kudu, Bluewildebeest, Impala, Blesbuck, Springuck, Warthog, Gemsbuck, Redhartebeest... all stuff a well placed 30.06 shot should do in my opinion ?

I like the Krieghoff classic 470 big five alot togheter with their new Semprio 30.06 but i was hoping if you could reply with some other favorites you like or have expierence with, also tips about good ammo would help. Thanks

I have NOT been to Africa yet so I'm as green to it as you. I have on the other hand read just about everything there is to read on Africa. On plains game a 30-06 with a WELL CONSTRUCTED bullet should be fine. The vitals of most African game is behind the shoulder rather than behind the point of the shoulder as here in America. So plan to break the shoulder. I hear that gemsbock can take a lot of lead and eland are HUGE.

I'm planning on going to South Africa in 2009 to hunt gemsbok, blesbock, impalla, kudu, lion, baboon & jackal. My rifles that are going are Kimber .22-250 for the baboons & jackal. a .338 WM with 250 gr Nosler particians for everything but the lion. A CZ in .416 Rigby for the lion, shooting softpoints.

The .470 in a powerful round and the Krieghoff is a fine rifle....a bit spend for me. Heck, 20 rounds for the .416 cost $229 per box of 20!!!

for the .30-06: good bullet, good shot placement

with rising ammo costs, cartridges for the .416 rigby, .404 jeffries, .47o and up are out of sight with prices in the $200-350 range per box of 20 for factory or custom loaded rounds. the only way to shoot these frequently is to reload. the cost of .375 H&H and .458 Lott is much less and allows more trips to the range for practice. these will run from $80-180 per box of 20. still a lot more than a box of .30-06 180 grains.

i have never bought ammunition in africa. i know that some peole charge over $3.00 per round for .300 magnum if you shoot their ammunition. i always take my own and have never had any lost en route. i imagine that .458 win mag and lott would be available in larger cities, but readily?, i cannot say.

you can buy 458WM most everywhere in the larger cities but be prepared to pay heavily for it in Africa. I had 300wsm ammo in luggage that got delayed so bought some in Windhoek, Namibia at one of the 3 gun shops there...you'll need your rifle import permit to buy ammo...I paid $90 USD per box of 20 Norma 180 gr. You can buy 30-06 all over Africa too but it to is steep in price.
