I grew up in Oregon hunting bear and cougar with hounds. Then I went away to college and the military. Now I am looking to head back to my home state only to discover it is now illegal to hunt bear and cougar with hounds! How and when did this happen? I suspect it has a lot to do with all the rich riff-raff who have moved there from California with their desire to make Oregon into California-north. It was well underway when I left for college in 1990 but I had no idea they had made such destructive inroads.
I also see that in many parts of the state it isn't possible for people who work for a living to afford to buy a nice house anymore.
I guess I will have to look to another state where the "McMansion" people from California haven't been as successful at destroying, if such a place exists in the west anymore. Any ideas?

To make it harder :) I dont know bud. What happen to just walking to hunt, instead of sitting in a tree, or just using a rifle w/o a stand? Now people walk around with but pads stuck to their behind. Using blinds, ATVs/Buggies. I dont do none of these and only use my legs and my rifle :thumbsup1: Only dawgs I need are my partners :D

Welcome to the site pmfb.

Oregon has changed a ton since I was a kid. It seems to be trying to ot do California. Like the people that leave the valley and move over here to escape it, they bring the valley with them. The californians simply bring with them their ways!

I think the no hounds thing will eventually backfire. Over here we are having a lot of new lion problems, they are not afraid of people anymore! Tell you how it was when I was i high school, there was a bounty on lions! Once the cats and bears and, should they really bring them, wolves, invade Portland, Salem and Eugene, things will change. This entire state is controlled by those three cities.

pmf, not sure what area your from in oregon but bend is the worst ive seen talk about urban sprawl. I was there last year and couldnt believe it. It was even bigger than when I was there 2 years prior. and talk about market inflation. I was there for 3 months working and rented a house the house across the street was more or less the same and for sale for the low price of $450k, we are talking about a 2,000 square ft 3 bed, 2 bath house on 1/8 of an acre and about 7' away from the next. I spoke with some of the local guys and they made it sound like there was a huge california population and its getting worse every year. Makes you almost want to find a swamp to live in.

Once all the ranchers, loggers, and farmers are put out of business and all the country folks are herded into the People's Republik...."the change" is a huge virus that continues to spread!

Good luck escaping it pmfb22! :](*,)

Welcome aboard Tree Killer. I think you got the picture. Something you'll notice about California, they ar not trying to establish the wolf,,,,,,,yet!

csummerall when I was a kid we'ed go to East Lake fishing a couple times each summer. Sisters had about three stores, one a resturant on the east end we always ate breakfast at and Bend you never saw as hwy 97 didn't go into town. Boy have times changed. I think bend is crashing tho, they've really overbuilt!

My son and his wife live in Bend. He makes $16 hr and she works three days a week and makes $9.75 hr. They qualified for a Habitat house. Son says they can't afford anything else. Old girl friend has a house in town, small two bedroom and not in great shape. appraised at 250K!

When places like Bend and Sisters become a playground for the wealthy, the economy suffers badly. I have no idea how the few mill workers left there make it, I don't know how my son does.

Don,speaking of californiains moveing forward, was talking to a local just other day, he was saying mountain house was bought by a Bussiness man from cali, to use as a "getaway" cabin. not sure how accurate story is, but I wouldnt be surprised.

Better watch out Don, once folks learn of that great resturant ya got there in Antelope, folks will be streaming into town.. ::neener:

When I was there in bend I was driling at the dump and got to know a bunch of guys that worked there and they all live out in redmond, or out in sisters and if they did live in town they usually were forced to rent due to the high cost market. My wife came down for a while and loved it with all the lakes and desert but once she looked at home prices that was it. Im not sure how the economy can sustain itself there I know alot of people buy the houses for winter homes for skiing and what not but sooner or later with the lack of infastructure it will crash. The same goes with the outer areas of portland, like sheridan it used to be all farms now its big housing developments and stores the same goes with springfield, Im not sure what the planning commisions are thinking down there but atleast in washington there is some control. But down there it seems like it all comes down to the dollar and tax base for the government. a 5 acre lot will bring in more government money with 30 houses than it would with anysort of crop.

I can see that a lot of folks here don't like Californians, and I can understand why. I came to Bend from California myself about five years ago to get my kids away from the liberal, anti American majority that destroyed everything good in that state.

That being said I think that there is a misconception about the people moving to Bend, all being from California and wanting to change this place. Working in the Public Works Department I can tell you that the majority of folks coming to Bend these days are from Portland, Salem, Eugene and Seattle. Not exactly the most conservative people, I think we can sgree on that.

Most of the Californians I have met are here because of the same reason as mine. I know there are plenty of pinhead liberals from California here, but for the most part the Native Orregonians from the West side of he hill are making the changes. All you have to do is look at the local politicians, City Council members, and related commities over here. All Native's.

Don't be fooled. It is not only the Californian's. It is also directly related to sportsmen not wanting to support ALL legal outdoor activities. There are fly fishermen who look down their noses at bait fishermen and bird hunters who don't want traps in the field and elk hunters who think hounding and baiting is "too easy" or wrong.

Like I said, I understand your frustration but you need to look at the facts. Cities such as Portland, and Eugene have always been liberal strongholds long before Californians began fleeing the illegal invasion. Another point is the fact that our states politicians are not California transplants, they are Oregonians. The only way to create actual change is through legislation, and it's being pushed by our liberal politicians.

Quick numbers to ponder: Californians in Bend make up just under 12% of the population. 72% of those are registered Republicans. I suppose it's a regional issue, people that move to the East side of the mountain tend to be more conservative and on the West more liberal. I can't speak on Portland issues but I would assume that Californians moving to Portland are more liberal. My folks were born in Salem and left there nearly 50 years ago because the State in general was becoming more of a Socialist community every year. By far the majority of "goofball libs" here in Bend are the ones coming over from the West side of Washington and Oregon. As far as the housing market, the entire country is going through the same mess. Housing cost always goes through major spikes in popular areas.

being a native i have seen what all the wackos and tourists that have moved here and wrecked our state have done. maybe if they would just go back instead of staying after they go to dizyland, would help, but blaming me for your problems isn't . we have a saying here "wecome to california, now go home " . I just have to go away into the Sierra's farther, besides I never needed a dog to help me get game
