Hello all,
It's been years since I went after elk with a bow. Am considering it again, but when I started looking into calls the choices are many! What ones work good and sound good? I hate to buy one and not be able to return it if I'm not satisfied with it. I used a diaphragm and grunt tube in the past. I'm wondering if these still work better than the reed type bugles I'm seeing these days. I liked the diaphragm for the versatility of it. Able to make bugles and cow calls with the same one.

Their are several good calls out there for use in elk hunting. I myself like the Primos Termanator, it is not hard to blow and sounds realistic.

I use a Primos Ivory plate for cow calls and for bugling with a tube. I also have a hoochie mama till they get in close. Also from Primos. Hoochie mama is a good one to make like a couple cows are there instead of just one cow.

My calls include:

2 diaphrams from Primos
Carlton grunt tube
Hoochie mama(sqeeze call from Primos)
Hyperlip single reed also from Primos

Diaphrams are very versatile. You can cow call to stop a bull while at full draw. Very realistic bugles also. The sqeeze calls allow you to sound like a herd. You sqeeze and use your diphram at the same time. The hyperlip is good for estrus sounds. You can get a real good pleading call with it.

I USE THE CARLTON MEGA BUGGLE AND THE SQUEEZE ME CALF CALL . YOU CAN USE THESE TOGETHER BY TAKING THE REED OUT AND PUTTING THE SQUEEZE ME CALL INSIDE .THIS HAS WORKED GREAT FOR ME THE LAST 3 TIMES I HAVE GONE ELK HUNTING ( BULL AND COW ).
