| Hey guys, In your opinion what is the most potent .22 LR cartridge. I was looking and so far i think the aguila .22LR 30 gr. supermax are a good bet. They have stated 1750 f.p.s and 204lbs. of energy! That is alot of power for a .22LR. I am looking forward to hearing your opinions on this question. Ohh yeah.... What is the maximum, accurate range of a .22 LR. Thanks. |

That's pretty impressive velocity for 22 lr :thumbsup1:
Here's a paragraph from an article that I found quite interesting and actually never considered it before:
(quote)
.22 LR is effective within 150 meters (490 ft). After 150 meters the ballistics of the round are such that the large "drop" will be difficult to compensate. The relatively short effective range, low report, and light recoil has made it a favorite for use as a target practice cartridge. The accuracy of the cartridge is good, but not exceptional; various cartridges are capable of the same or better accuracy. A contributing factor in rifles is the transition of even a high-velocity cartridge projectile from supersonic to subsonic within 100 yards. As the bullet slows, the shock wave caused by supersonic travel overtakes the bullet and can disrupt its flight path, causing minor but measurable inaccuracy.(end quote)
I alway sighted 22 lr at distances of no more than 75 tds max(many years ago) 50 yards being the most common max range, but seen many large game animals fall to the 22 lr at distances of about 80 + yards, supplying the neighbours with well needed food.
I guess I don't know the answer :P :P :P |

| In my opinion .22 LR isn't very potent in general. I've seen sheet metal thinner than 1/16 inch thick being inpenetrable by a .22 LR at 15 yards. But, don't get me wrong. I'm not so unimpressed with it to stand down range and let someone shoot me with one. People vastly underestimate it and that's why it the one caliber responsible for the most shooting deaths in the US. |
