I want to give my son an elk hunt for HS graduation. We bow hunt deer in Texas, do a lot of backpacking. Never been elk hunting. With college looming can't afford expensive hunt. I am thinking of either a drop camp or finding a place we can hike into. Planning on driving to New Mexico to hunt.
Am I crazy?
Any suggestions on which units to apply to?
thanks |

| That sounds like a great graduation present. NM draw odds for the better units are low. The 16 units are popular, ifyou are going to archery hunt, you might look at the 15's. |

I'd think about what you want to get out of the hunt...a cow elk hunt would be a great start where you could get into some animals with a DIY hunt. They are a great challenge to go after as well. Colorado has some great over the counter tags....good luck!
I'm taking my dad for his first elk hunt this fall - it will be a great experience for those in the family that like hunting - and great memories.... |

Robert,
I like Hiker's suggestion. Althouth, now that I think about it you might get my tag.
Really, that area offers some of the greatest public land hunting for elk that exists. There are some real great places to camp and the terrain is beautiful. I think you should apply individually for the best chance. If only one of you gets drawn, then that is probably better for elk hunting anyway.
Send me a message if you get drawn and I can direct you to some great spots.
Good luck. |
