Some states, as I understand is the case in Utah, do not allow you to apply for a goat and sheep in the same year. You can't even apply for a bonus point for both species, you have to pick.

Does any state allow you to at least get a bonus point for both species?

Colorado does. Deadline is 4/1

Idaho it's one or the other ... and you can't put in for deer/elk controlled if you put in for either sheep/goat/moose (in general). But it's okay - I can live with it.

Yes, I must get up there some day and get one of those Dall sheep. Good to know - maybe I could also get a goat.

Actually, a lot of the state is still open to general hunting for sheep. A lot of the goat areas have gone to draw, but its still possible to get over the counter tags for registration hunts in some areas of the southeast.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to put in for Colorado. A few questions:

1. I hear you need a certain minimum number of preference points to even apply for most sheep and goat units in Colorado. True?

2. The Colorado sheep brochure says this on page 8:

"The max. points you can accumulate for Rocky Mountain
bighorn sheep or mountain goat are 3. If you have 3 preference
points for bighorn sheep or mountain goat and you fail to draw a
first-choice license, you will receive weighted preference for that
species. Weighted preference increases your probability of drawing.
If you draw a license or don’t apply at least once during a
five-year period, accumulated points are purged from your record."

My question is, what happens after you get your third point, and you don't draw? What is this "wieghted preference" that you get?

Yes in order to get into the lottery for rams or goats you will need 3 preference points. In some cases you can draw a ewe tag with 0 points or less than 3.

When you earn a weighted point, it helps you get a better number, so with each weighted point your odds will be better and better. I'll try a quick explanation....when you go into the lottery, you will be assigned a 9 digit number i.e. (998877661), that number will be reversed (166778899) you will enter the draw lottery with this number. With each weighted point you have earned, they will divide your number, so your odds will increase. The lowest numbers will draw the tags. Each year some people will draw with no weighted points, yet others with 3 PP and 6 weighted points don't. When this happens the person with the 3 PP and 0 weighted drew a very low number right off of the bat and even with the division of weighted points, the weighted point person could not get lower than the person with 0 weighted points.

-Just remeber, all non-res sheep and goat hunting requires a guide.......We have some of the best hunting here on the Kenai Peninsula!!(and, no, we are not a guide service advertising..just Alaskans who remember that time, years ago, when we dreamed...........you know- that ALASKAN BUG :wink: )

-as far as I know, Alaska does not have "preference points" in it's permit app system.

MT, CO, and NV all do. WY has the point system for the sheep but everyone's on equal ground for the goat, though the deadline has passed.
