25 wssm. i have an old leupold vx 1. would like to mount it up for my son. acutally i would like to mount anything on it at this point. thought i was just going to go to walmart and get a cheap scope for him to learn how to shoot with but walmart has nothing. plus the counter girl knows less than my 9 yr old. so, the situation is this. i have burris mounts on the gun now with no scope (acquired it at a pawn shop - cheap). what is the easiest way out without taking it to a gun shop? do all burris scopes fit the burris mounts on this rifle? what kind of mounts do i need for a vx1? where is the best place to buy online? thanks. scott.

If you are looking to keep cost down you could use Leupold Rifleman rings and base mounts. Basically Weaver style stuff made of solid aluminum. The VX-I uses 1 inch rings and the mounts are specific to the model of rifle action you have, manufacturers make the bases (mounts) specific for many different rifles. You could also just go with machined steel regular Leupold mounts and rings too. You can buy on-online, but just about any good gun shop or sporting goods store should sell these, even many walmart stores.

By the way, the VX-I isn't that old of a model from Leupold. Introduced I think after 2001 or 2002 sometime. There is a way to date your Leupold scope based on the letter combos in the serial number under the turret housing. You could find the date codes key under FAQ on Leupolds website.

I got a model 70 short action. I put a Carl Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 on it. Great scope for that rifle!
