I just moved back to the country and want to get a "little" hound to get into rabbit hunting. I have only heard of people using beagle, but I was wondering if any of you guys have any suggestions.

Beagles are not your only choice for rabbits but your safest. Any scent hound will run a rabbit to some degree of another, if trained to do so, but beagles are selectively bred for it, you get a good dog and oyu drop it on a rabbit track and your training is over, the dog smells bunny and Goes!

as labs have been selectively bred for retrieving and greyhounds for sight running, so have beagles been bred for rabbits.

for a beagle registered with lots of letters and champion lines I would contact Aubrey Holcomb, Daddy Rabbit Kennels in Royston, GA he has some of the finest beagles in the country.
Do a search for "Daddy Rabbit Kennels" he has so many champions and hall of fame that any search for his kennel will get you multiple hits. you can tell him his "Yankee hound buddy" sent you.

NEK kennels, in the North East Kingdom of Vermont, Pete Richardson, he has the best hare dogs I have ever seen. period.
also has some crosses on occassion when his big game hounds make their chains reach to the beagles. lol.
. Do a Search for "Snowshoeharehunter" and you should get his website or contact info.
Again, Pete is a nationally known big game hound hunter, treeing over 100 bears a season, plus cats , hare , his line of dogs do it all. any search for "Snowshoeharehunter"
or "Pete Richardson North Troy Vermont" will bring up all kinds of results.

you can tell him some guy with a big hound named "Flop" sent you.

so there are the best of the beagles and the best of the rest including beagle crosses to choose from. They will make sure you are going to hunt their dogs and hunt them hard, otherwise they wont part with any.

you can also find both these guys on www.RabbitHuntingOnline.com among other places.
welcome back and welcome to hound hunting!

Thanks. It's good to be back!!! I have a yellow lab that does alright on pheasants, and just love the satisfaction of hunting with dogs. Alot of my buddies I grew up with were big coon hunters and I have alot of friends that let me tag along on running bear and coyotes with the hounds. I just love it but have always wanted to get into rabbit hunting. Thanks again for the info.

I guess it depends on the area you live in. I live in Oregon and we just walk around the sage brush on the outskirts of alfalfa fields and just "jump shoot" jack rabbits. We get 15-20 a day easily.
