I've baited for over 23 years now and have found all the big bears we have killed came off of meat baits.Baits that were tended daily with fresh beef and horse scraps.

It has been my experience that pretty accurate in the spring but not for fall baiting. I consider trophy boars one with a minimum of a 19" skull.

Black Bear must vary greatly by region.
Early in our season ( Fall only in Minnesota ) meat does not attract many bear. Later it works well. Even locally success with meat is hit or miss. Meat always attracts crows, lots of crows.

Meat and meat based baits have always worked well for the spring (May-early June) however our fall season ( August-September) grains sweet stuff usually work much better.

Most bait stands around here are in alder thickets with very heavy canopy's not much chance of birds even seeing it.

The bears I have shot (fall bears) have always had a sweet tooth as well. Donuts and molasses seemed to work best for me but smoked fish works well initially to get the bears to my set then I switch to the sweets to keep them there. After the sweets are out they don't seem to want to touch the smoked fish which I usually end up taking out because the coons get in it.

Here's a 600pounder that would turn his nose up at the sugar and just wanted fresh meat.

Guideone, Nice bear. Do you remember if this was taken with rifle or bow, and where it was hit?
