I currently use a Contender with a 23" 45-70 barrel to hunt deer in the brush. I am planning on going on a bear hunt later this year, will this be a suitable caliber for the hunt?

That is my big black bear caliber myself. I used a Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 with 405 gr. hard cast bullets. I have taken 2 black bear with it. One shot was all I needed. I also use my 500 Mag handgun as my black bear gun.

I have 4 of the 45-70's. A Marlin SS Guide gun, H&R Buffalo Classic, Encore and my BFR 45-70 handgun with a 10 inch barrel. Can you tell I love the 45-70.

Also Welcome... :thumbsup1:

Redhawk...I couldn't tell at all that you like the 45-70. I like the way the Leverevolutions work with my contender which I also use for deer hunting in heavy brush.

Last bear that I got was w/my Guide Gun w/handloaded 45-70's. It was way too long ago in NW CA where we were allowed to hunt w/hounds on Miller-Rellim Redwood property. Wow! My hat's off to hound hunters! You gotta be in shape-I managed but was dragg'in when it was over. Sure glad I had some new friends along to bone it out & help pack the tasty vittles out. Heard them barking treed off an old yarder landing & we had to go down (way down) the ravine & cross a creek to where the old sow was treed about 30' up to the lowest limbs of a redwood. I was down in the creekbed another 20' lower. I laid on my back & crossed my legs to make a rest. I was using a red dot scope as the NW CA jungles are usually close work. Wind was blowing & the limbs were moving back & forth making for a peep show w/the bear. When Kenny pulled the dogs off he yelled down the creekbed where I was waiting & yelled shoot. I did & the sow summersaulted down & landed w/a smack. I thought it would kill her but she jumped up & then tumbled down the ravine into the creek. She sat up mighty pissed as I jumped up & levered another shell into the chamber & ran towards her. Josh beat me to it & put 2 45 Long Colt rounds into her chest from his single action. I came around a big root wad just in time to see the sow settle into the creek w/her last steamy breath jetting out of two 45 cal holes in her chest. My shot was off & the flattened-tip 458 Win slug I was used mushroomed perfectly & stayed intact. The bullet stayed in the shoulder which was pretty much destroyed. Yeah, despite my poor shooting that day, I must say that the 45-70 is a good woods gun for bear!
