Later this spring I will be heading to Alaska up around McGrath to help out my
cousin at his mining operation. They always have a lot of black bear in camp and was wondering what is a good way to judge their size as I've never hunted em before. I've seen plenty of Browns and grizzley's over the years, but not many black and I wouldn't mind killin a nice one while I'm up there

Here are some picts of one of the bears that came into camp quite often last year. I really like the dark color on em.

That is definitely a nice bear. I'm not very good at judging from pictures but I'll go out on a limb and say 7' plus or minus. If you can judge grizzly's or brownies look for the same features on a black bear. Head, ears, barrel, and neck if you can measure pad tracks they are a good indicator of size.

He would make a nice trophy if it was me I would probably take him.

....We love to hunt bear, though I am no expert. We eat bear more than any other game animal....and harvest 2 or 3 of them in the freezer each year....
...along with what Alaskachuck said....feet, legs, ears, head....and more specifically about the ears...if they are more on top of their head, they tend to be younger...therefore gen. smaller..as a general rule: look for rounder head...shorter nose, ears on the side....shorter-looking legs, (indic. larger body....longer legs mean prob. younger)...and a swaggering gate.
.....good luck!!!

Thanks for the tips......figured it might be the same as a brown, just on a smaller scale. Hoping I can get my brother to stay in Alaska a few more years so I can hunt a Brown and a sheep. Always wanted to do that. I'm lucky enough to have lots of family up there so that is a big plus for hunting and fishing in Alaska.

Here's a couple more picts. Not sure if it is the same bear or not, as they have a few that come around camp. This one sure looks like a good big bear to get.

That boy looks like he was fattened on moose calves you really need to remove him from the gene pool. The locals would probably thank you plus he would make a nice rug.
