Burris will replace the standard knobs on my Black Diamond scope with target knobs for $80. They are covered by a bushing cap so I wouldn't have to worry about accidentally turning the knob while I'm waking through the woods. I'm more concerned about the added bulk and over complicating things. Do you guys recommend target knobs on a scope that will be hunted with a majority of the time?

All of my scopes are Leupold tactical models with the target type turrets they dont ad much weight and the extra size for me is worth it to be able to adjust for longer ranges in the fields i often take most of my deer. i would go for it.

The least complicated that you can make things, the better off you'll be. I personally would advise against target knobs on a hunting scope. You just don't need them to be making all kinds of adjustments while hunting, and they do get in the way in the field. Once your scope is zero'd at a shooting range then all you should worry about is making the shot on your animal. I would recommend that not too much be sticking out of your scope while in the field hunting. Nobody will like this advise, but in a hunting scope I've always wanted the least amount of bells & whistles. As long as a scope is clear, bright, reliable, durable, accurate, low profile screw-on adjustment caps, and not too shiny or too glossy. That's all I want. Leupold 6X fixed powered for me is the way to go as far as a hunting scope is concerned. A scope like this is more than plenty capable of assisting shots out to 300 yrds. Shots much more beyond that on a biggame animal is just someone caring more about their own ego rather than hunanely taking their game animal.

Thanks for the replies. I'll be the first to admit I'm bad to get "buck fever" so I'm leaning toward not having the knobs installed just to give me one less thing to panic about. I'll be practicing out to 400 yards, but 300 will be my maximum range unless it is the perfect opportunity and I feel confident I can make a quick humane kill at a slightly longer range.

I would agree that target knobs are a bad idea for a hunting rifle. Target knobs are fine if you are shooting from the bench or doing some target shooting. I have target knobs on all my varmint rifles for good reason. Long range shooting requires elevation and windage adjustments. If this rifle is going to be used in the woods for Deer, Elk, etc. It should have standard turrets. Sight the rifle in 1inch high at 100yds and you should be good to go, depending on the cartridge. Those high knobs will just snag on sticks and twigs you don't need them.
