New to this forum. A special thanks to all that reply. I am farely new to hog hunting but not hunting in general. We have a lease in the San Saba/Llano, Tx. area and trying to get my kids into the tradition of hunting. We have been out twice; both times in the evening until about 10 pm. using a red spot light in a still ground blind to only return the next day in the light to see that they have already come. As far as bait, we have used the powder; Hog Wild along with regular deercorn/protein and buried some soured milo which they seem to like the best. The reason we have not gone before dawn is that I read some where that the best time to see them is in late afternoon and early evening. Is there anything else I can do to even up the odds. I was under the understanding that hogs are easier to hunt than deer.

You should set up a game camera so you can see what time they come and how many you have. Might help you find a time to set up and catch them. Some people use timed feeders with lights on them. The pigs get used to the light and come to feed. Pigs are pretty smart and they can cover a lot of ground. Here in California most people use dogs to bay the pigs because it works well. I prefer a spot and stalk technique using vantage points to check known travel routes or water.

Granite gives good advice. The feeder idea is a good one as well. Hogs are creatures of habit and your feeders can actually help modify their feeding habits as they will learn to know when the feeders go off and come to feed. But, a game camera will tell you precisely what time they feed........

I have not hunted hogs in Texas. I hunt hogs here in Maui Hawaii. I have never had luck first thing in the morning. I have taken hogs as early as mid-morning, but, generally do best in the afternoon a couple of hours before evening. In the area that I hunt, the hogs stay in the pine/eucalyptus forests during the day and come out to feed at the edge of the timber in the afternoon.

I have had good luck both still hunting and from a stand. I find that hogs do seem to have good hearing and sense of smell. On the other hand, I find keeping your ears open helps a lot. I often will hear the pigs before I see them. Often you will only hear a grunt or two. When you get near to the pigs, sometimes you can smell them. They don't smell bad, just a sort of musky odor, faint but detectable.

If you still hunt, remember that hogs do not stand as high as deer. Look closer to the ground and watch for color. I don't think hogs have as good a camoflage color as deer. Hogs will generally feed as they travel, so move slowly because they are moving slowly. I have on occasion stopped for a couple of minutes and had a hog walk out from behind a shrub.
