As many of y'all know, I have had many problems with some locals "ruining" my hunting, by invading the place regularly with deer dogs. Some folks may think that I'm opposed to hunting with dogs. That's not really the case. The other night, at 1000pm, I heard a bunch of dogs treeing a coon right behind the house. I walked out onto the back porch, and really enjoyed hearing them tree. I used to be a coon hunter myself(many moons ago). Then I saw 3 lights coming up through MY woods, going to the tree. Then, a loud pickup came up into the yard, and a man(who I didn't even know) wanted to go get the dogs. Did this bother me? NO. I told him the best way to get in there to them. The difference in this situation and the before mentioned problems is that these coon dogs are not intentionally released 4-5 times a week to exploit this farm. It was no harm done, and I was glad to help the man get his dogs, and the coon too, if he wanted it. I''ll gladly help decent folks retrieve their dogs, anytime I can. Might even hunt with them sometimes....

I'm not so sure that land owners out here would be so understanding. Lots of things have changed since I was a kid and people just don't want you or your dogs on their property. Many many years ago I knew some people in Va that ran deer with dogs, have no idea how they could control where the dogs went, same with bear dogs, hog dogs and coon dogs. The dogs go where the animal leads them.

Hunting deer with dogs brings on the heat. A lot of people are insenced that that happens but, from some of the swamps I saw, don't know how else you'd get them out, but then again, people do all the time. I hate to pick on a class of people but hound men seem to be an undereducated lot that is upset that they can't just do as they please, at least those that I know and knew. They mostly nice people, just didn't like your fences. I am not a houndman yet sometimes I find myself getting resentfull of huge tracks of land shut down by private ownership. The repore betweenland owners, often non-resident, and land users is definatelly strained.

It was good of you to help those guys out but they did nothing the deer hunters didn't do other than they weren't hunting deer. Tuff situtation!

Well, I guess my problem is more with deer dogs, because they are a negative issue with me. I'm not bothered by the other types of hunting that dogs are used for. Now, if somebody was running all over the farm and coming up in the yard late at night with the frequency of the deer dog nuissances that I have to endure, yes. I'd be bothered by that. Once in a while isn't too bad. I can tolerate it when it actually isn't a frequently planned thing. My point is, not all dog hunters intend to be pains in the rear-end. Some others are nothing but.....

I can certainly understand where your coming from. In your situtation I would feel the same. People running the deer dogs should be required to have permission to run them on private property. Not having that is, in my opinion, tresspass. I would be like me sending a bird dog out into fields on private property to flush the birds to me waithing off the property. Unfortunatelly the nature of hounds makes them hard to control on a trail. So, I'd probably file a tresspass or animal at large complaint against the dogs owners. Try to catch the dog.

This deer dog thing is being closely inspected in Va. now.
