Hello all, I am new to this and I am looking for some help! I am looking for a place to hunt mule deer in Montana for a party of three. This is a trip we have wanted to do for many years, but we can't spend a lot of money! I would like to hunt somewhere in the high country verses a plains or river bottom situation. I would prefer to hunt with a smaller family ranch type of place verses a big outfitter operation. Any info that you could give would be very helpful. thanks alot

So I take it you want to pay a tresspass fee? There's a lot of private land that has been opened up on the block managemant program. Montana also has a lot of public land in the high country.

Hiker is right about private land being available thru the block mgt. program but keep in mind it's not an easy draw for Non-Residents to get a deer tag. In some areas it's even more difficult. You have a better chance of drawing the combo elk/deer tag around 50% than just a deer tag. Also some of the best muledeer hunting in Montana is in the eastern plains or along the Missiouri. river breaks. If you're looking for high country mule deer Wy. or Colorado would be a better choice

A tresspass fee is when you pay the landowner to hunt on his property. usually they'll have a certain part of the ranch that they let people hunt on. but they only let people hunt if they're willing to pay a couple bucks. Depending on the land owner, they can be anywhere from 100 to 1000 dollars typically for mule deer
