| Hi everyone, I'm a newbie here and I'm looking for any helpful tips you can give to better my odds at catching bigger hogs. So far I have one trap thats working for me but I only catch hogs around 75lbs. or smaller. I think the design of it has a lot to do with it. First off, it's small.....4 feet high, 4 feet wide and 5 feet deep. Second is, it has a bottom in it which is wire fence, and last is I used a piece of flat metal to make the pad to trip the trigger for the guillitein door. I have started to build a new one already that is 7 feet deep, 5 feet wide, and 4 feet tall. I am leaving out the bottom and I plan to make the entire front open so it will hopefully look more open and inviting to them. Does this new design sound better or should I change something?, and are there any other tactics I should try? I use soured corn in the trap and I also have a hole dug nearby that I keep soured corn in constantly. What else am I missing to catch the big ones? |

What are you baiting it with?
One secret is..........wire it open and feed it good for a week or so and then set it. This will trick some of the bigger hogs and then when you set it, you will catch them. The trap sounds small. Usually the smaller hogs will get there first and go in ahead of bigger hogs. Best designed hog traps are circular traps that are about 25 feet in diameter. You can home build these and put a trap type gate in them. Larger numbers of hogs will enter and feed befoe someone trips the catch trigger.

I am in the center of hog country.... Tx hill country. I catch over a 100 a year and I have found the best product is called Black Gold, cost about 12 dollars per quart. Go to txhogdogs.com and you can check out the product. Simply sour up some corn and pour this over it. |

| Sounds like you are doing things right maybe just need a little bigger trap i build just the standard style box traps with a door that slides down in the front kind of like you described have you ever tried using sour corn for bait, down here we will take three or four 5 gallon buckets and fill them with corn then pour in water till its full and mix in some brown sugar or powdered kool aid mix usually grape flavored and stir it up good then put the lids on the buckets and let them sit for about 10 days it will stink like hell but hogs will come for miles when they smell it |
