Several years ago my daughter shot a bear shortly before dark. My son shot his first bear about 15 miles away. When we got back to track my daughters bear it had been dark for several hours. There was not a heavy blood trail but my son-in-law is an outstanding tracker. We came to an area in alder swamp where everything was flattened. At the far side of this area was the bear. There was blood everywhere. Timber Wolves had found the bear before we got to it. The photo shows the bear back at camp the next day.

We had wolves try to take a bear from one of our hunters this year. He had to shoot into the ground in front of them to drive them away. The wolves know where all the baits are and even feed on the baits (Granola). Once they smell blood, they will try to claim the carcass.

I think one of my baits has been hit by wolves each year but I have not seen any wolf sign around it. In the past it was a productive bait site. It has always been tough to get bear to hit it. I keep trying because I have found sign of a very large Black Bear ( 6 3/4 inch front pads ) traveling through the area. No problem with other sites.
