Thought you guys might like to see some deer. I will start off with a nice herd of mulies from yesterday afternoon. The conditions were foggy and I am a quarter a mile away, so the photo quality is poor, but you can see some nice bucks.
Then this afternoon I had a chance to see a lot of whitetails. I didn't take a picture of the first eight or nine that was grazing, but did stop to take a picture of two herds. Both photos are from the same spot, one looking SW and one looking SE. I am almost a half a mile from the herds. I counted 34 in the first herd and 31 in the second.
All I can say is that there are too many whitetail does. In this two mile stretch there were 73 whitetails and I couldn't make out any bucks. |

| No extended season in Unit 17, as is the case with most of the western Kansas units(1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 17, 18). |

Thanks a lot, Maynard. Now I have to get off my butt and go out into the single-digit temps and take photos of our SE Colorado winter deer--- :thumbsup1: (Wait, I can't--nephew accidently broke my camera over Christmas--guess you will have to take some more instead...)
I always wondered where the resident big guys go during the December season---Ford County, I guess. A little snow and ice sure makes them stand out, doesn't it?
I have a friend who drives the south river road from Pierceville into Cimmaron every day and all he does is complain about the whitetails he has to "dodge" on the trip. (Won't buy a license, just complains...)
I asked a Kansas DOW officer about the ban on whitetail late season permits in units 2 & 17 and his take on it was waaaay to many folks cannot tell the difference between a mule deer doe and a whitetail. |

Some education and hefty fines for shooting the wrong species might help. I know Colorado shows pictures in the regs of cow elk and moose to show the difference and I suspect that a very substantial fine would be levied for shooting the moose instead of the elk. |
