Hello...

I want to try pig hunting. I live in the North Bay area and am curious if anyone out there has any information that they are willing to share regarding locations for pig hunting. Any information and advice is very appreciated.

I think along the coast around say santa barbara or around there. I know I had a marine that went to some air force base and got around there. Also in I have heard squaw valley has some but that is alot of private land

ive been looking into that too. there is a lot of outfitters who will ether promise u a pig or almost promise u one lol. one of the cheapest is like 600$ a day. some will put u up in a room while u may need to get a motel. im from s. cal but have been thinking about it. not sure if wild pig is good to eat though, they can get worms i hear and if not cooked properly u can get them but im not sure. id still like to go though robert

I was told squaw valley has a lot as well but can't seem to make contact with any land owners out there. I'm told Pine Flat Lake has them as well but when I go there, the pigs are no where to be seen. I just about had it with these pigs! LOL. I just wish there was a place where I can go to where I'll be promised one.

huntingbret, there are cal hunting magazine i have it somewhere , that promise u a pig there are different optinion but its about 600$ aday. i was thinking about doing that infact i just talked to my wife about it lol. money is tight though. i think my 30 06 should be okay though

Most of the pigs are on private property. Only a very small percentage of the pigs taken each year come from public land. So spending the money for a guide might be worth it. If you consider that you are paying for access to the land, the guides time and expertise, transportation , and dogs. Most even offer skinning and gutting included in the price.

Yes wild pig is good to eat. Yes 30-06 is enough gun. Who wants a promise to get something? Is that really hunting or just shooing. Camp roberts, fort hunter liget both are open to the public sometimes during the year. If you want a pig find water with sign around and be there before the sun comes up. They are creatures of habit once you know there routine you get um. Me and my dad once watched a pack of pigs for a whole year come out of one brush patch and go to the nearst oak with acorns then when they were done they would go back to the same brush patch every single night. However they arent stupid so if we did take one of them im sure they wouldent be doing the same the next day. You wont catch them in the open during the day better to pound brush, set up at dawn and dusk and glass. good luck

cool i know pigs can be dangerous i was hoping my rifle was big enough. i heard that a 44 mag will bounce off their heads lol. i know there are no promises too. just id like to enhance my odds alittle lol. im 41 and my not have too many chances to hunt especially since im new at it anyways. would it be good to carry a side arm while hunting pig just in case something happens thx robert :o

Ive never personally been in a position where i needed a side arm but if there close and you hit um in the butt are you going to have time to pull that side arm anyway? Ive seen a pig get shot in the head with a 223 at about 50yds it went thawack turned around and ran away. I dont recommend shooting them in the head their skulls are thick hit um behind the shoulder. $600 for a guarantee hunt. Sounds more like a killing than a hunt if you ask me. With that much money, I can probably buy 3 good size pigs from the farmers LOL.

I have been reading about people seeing pigs up around Indian Valley Reservoir, along Walker Ridge road. This area is very thick and tough to hunt, but people have been seeing fresh sign there. It has been years since I have been up there; and I saw no pigs and only old sign. Lake Sonoma is a tough hunt, but can be productive if you go enough. It is archery only with some shotgun only days mixed in. I have never hunted it, but the area around the lake is steep and thick. Another possible area is around Laguna Mountain or New Idria. This area gets hit pretty hard so it can be tough going, but I have known people who have killed pigs there. The DFG puts out a book on public land that you can find pigs on, but it is not easy. Pigs prefer private land, since they have more sustainable food and water sources.
