What are the odds on drawing in AZ if your coming from out of state? How big is the herd? Any recommended units?

I have the same questions as bitmasher.

"What are the odds on drawing in AZ if your coming from out of state? How big is the herd? Any recommended units?"

I've known for a while that this is a great trophy producing state. I've never researched it enough to find out what it would take for an out-of-stater to draw in and if the public lands are really worth the trip. Any insite would be great.

This "Basic" question was asked of ME on another site, from an Archer wanting info on a Az. Elk hunt.A "LOCAL" blistered ME for it.Come to find out,the Unit I suggested was his "Favorite",anyways lets try again---

For starters,go to the Az.web site http://www.azgfd.com The "proclamations load kind of slow,so be patient.Chance of drawing an Non-Res, Elk tag is "Slim" to "Poor",but that doesn't seem to stop many would be Elk hunters.Odds are impoosible to figure for a Non-Res.because Az. doesn't have a Guarantee of tags/Elk or N.Rim Deer,"Kaibab or Strip".Az.regs say "No More Than 10%may go to Non-Res for Bull Elk and N.RIM Deer.A lot of Hunters mistake this as a 10% Guaranteed,Big Difference.

Az. has a "Bonus Point System"so even a 1st. Timer can draw, but to accumulate Bonus Points a Hunt Licence must be purchased even if a Tag is not drawn.Or you can take a chance and "ONLY" purchase a Non-Res. licence if drawn, but NO points will be accumulated this way.More B.P.more chance to draw.Class G Non-Res lic. is $113.50 Elk Tag=$371.00

Basically,in order of best percentage to draw,Archery hunts are "Easier"a few percentage points better. Then muzzeloader hunts followed by General Rifle and Hardest and most Coveted the Early Bull/Bugle(Prime Rut)hunts, usually last week in Sept.On the application,YOU get 5 choices, but only 2 have a chance to draw, because since ALL units are over subscribed,no need to pick choices 3-5.

The "Largest"herd is in Unit 6,HUGE unit. This is South of Flagstaff.Az.But ALL elk units in Az.have GOOD Bulls. The best Bulls usually come from Units that border Indian Res.Archery hunts in these Units can be "Great",as can the Early Muz. hunts and of course the Early Bull Rifle. All considered if drawn to be "Hunts of a Lifetime".In general All units around Flagstaff have Good numbers of Elk.Go where the tags are, until you accumlate 5-6 B.P.because rember the NO more than 10%.Ex.General Rifle in Unit 6 has 735 tags,a possibility of 73 can go to Non-Res,unlikely but---

That should get YOU started, most serious ELK hunters make Az. a must apply state.Apply online and start Buying/Building those B.P.like the rest of US do---Good Luck

Thanks for the insite "azbiggame". I'll go to the azgfd.com web site and read into it a little more about non-res hunters. I would love to make just one trip down to AZ for a trophy hunt.

Don't wait, apply this year.Doesn't cost much, with online service."BUY " the licence and get started,on those "BONUS POINTS"for the Future years.Az. has a "Permanent" B.P.that YOU never loose, even after YOU draw.Must take THEIR "Hunter Safety Course" for this,Well worth it though. Can read about this on G&F web site ---
