Stay away from Eagle Lakes Outfitters from Pike County IL. Worst hunting experience I ever had. The guides don’t get paid, they receive a free hunt. All the guides are hunting with the paid clients, they take the best stands. They put 3-4 hunters on a 100 acre farm. 1st day they put me in a stand 300 yards from another hunter. I had to walk 2 miles back to camp because my guild got drunk and forgot to pick me up. My friend shot a nice 150 class buck on the second day, he said there were 2 more shooters that he had seen, they shut down that farm and let 2 of the guides hunt it. There’s is supposed to be a 125 minimum. 2 of the guides shot 2 bucks in the low 100s. The owner Ted was drunk every nite. This was my first and last trip to Illinois. I would like to return to Pick County but I still have very bad memories

rich sorry you did not enjoy your hunt. however i would like to clarify some facts you posted. first of all all of our guides are paid. our minimum is 130". two of the guides did not shoot small bucks. we do shut down farms when a certain number of bucks are taken. this is part of our extensive managment progrom. the reason we do this is to ensure large bucks for the future. if a guide went in and hunted they were trying to take does only. this is also part of our herd managment. as far as me being "drunk", there is a differnece between drinking a couple of beers with the clients and getting drunk. i understand that some people do not condone drinking but we have chosen to allow hunters to drink after the hunt is over. also i would like to know who your guide was that did not pick you up. i have no knowledge of this and i will address the situation(trust me).once again sorry you did not enjoy your hunt. ted

Hi Ted,
It is normally not in my nature to criticize, but I have hunted about a dozen different states with about 18 or so outfitters. This was by far the worst. I am not here to debate, just to inform other hunters. Every thing I stated in my post was true. Your guides did in deed shoot 2 small bucks, I was standing there when you measured them. I forget my guides name, but he is pictured on your web site about 6 times with very nice deer. If you look at your site I would say 50% of the Pics are of your guides. The two younger guides explained that they don’t get paid, they receive a free hunt. This seemed to be the case. In all of my guided hunting trips I never had to share the farm with my guide.(you can see how this would naturally be a conflict).
I am not against drinking, but the night you measured the deer shot by the hunter from Georgia was ridicules. You took 3 different measurements and got 3 different results, your hands where shaking uncontrollably. He refused to pay your fine and basically told you to go pound salt. As far as your deer management is concerned. If you remember Tom the one that shot the nice 140 on the Drury Farm. You stated that no one had hunted that farm yet. You just acquired the farm prior to gun season. You put 2 hunters & a guide on there to see what you had. (basically a scout & Hunt). The two hunters you put on that farm saw a lot of action. Tom shot 1 deer off the farm and it was closed to your paying clients. If that’s the way you manage that fine, but 1 deer per farm and closed.
I don’t know what your success rate is, but that week in November of 2005 your guides shot more deer then you paying clients.
Thanks for your belated concerns,
Richard Maguire

im not here to debate either and once again i am sorry you did not enjoy yourself. i find your comments very odd though. once agin they are just not true. when i score deer at night i have 10 or so people talking to me wich makes adding up several numbers in your head very difficult. ever try to count to 100 with someone standing next to you counting in a different sequence. any way i guarantee you we did not tell you that we just bought that farm because we closed on it april 20 of that spring. and it was not shut down because of one buck killed. that was probably the last one we were going to allow for that farm. 50% of our pics are not guides! well let me clarify. at one time or another many of our guides were clients. this is where some people get confused. as for the 2007 season. we had 3 guides kill deer and it was also after our clients were done. we have made some changes since you were here. hopefully for the better. i hope you understand that no matter what business someone is in there are things that go wrong and there is also room for improvement. we take an active role to correct any problems. anyhow i hope you have good luck in the future and once again sorry you did not enjoy your hunt. ted
