The author recommends at least a 308 or better when hunting elk. I have used a 30-06 on elk, but nothing else. What do you elk hunters out there use?

Personally, I've had amazing luck bringing down a Bull Elk, with this maneuver I like to call, "Microscopic Lead Spray Assault"!!

This is usually a very time consuming maneuver, but according to specialized animal activist information, "It's been highly successful at bringing down Ducks, Geese, and small 4-H club children."

I need to be honest, I've never attempted a full grown Bull Elk, but I'd assume if it works on ducks and geese, it should work on Elk.

Here's what you have to do... Find a Bull Elk of your liking, get close enough to your prey, and with the aid of wind, fire off several shots. With a little luck, Microscopic lead spray will be inhaled by your prey, which will settle in the lower extremities and the brain. Theory surrounding this maneuver is to increase the level of lead in the blood, which will lower the overall IQ of the Elk, and then all the hunter has to do is track the Elk until the animal forgets to breath.

According to specialized information.... 10 micrograms of lead per deciliter of blood will lower the Elks IQ by 5 points.

Anyways Bitmasher, Just kidding about the whole combat Microscopic lead spray maneuver. I usually use a 30-06 for elk as well. It's seems to be a great gun and I've never had any problems bring down the largest of bulls, no well I lied again. My largest probably isn't that big... So take it for what its worth.

Crikey! I've never considered pitching the projectile weapon and going for a kill technique that focuses on flat lining the games brain wave patterns directly. That is absolutely brilliant! We need to come up with something more fast acting than lead poisioning though. I mean the hunting season around here in CO is only 7 days, you know....

I'd suggest something audio based. Sounds proven to kill brain cells:

- Fidel Castro sermons....

- Once popular boy band music (98 degrees, n'sync, name your pain).... (have to be careful with this one, might insight rage in the herd).

- Laurence Welk reruns

- Barry Mannilow

- Anything with an accordian.

- Polka

Yup, just take any of these sounds, amplify, hone, and you have made your very own stupid ray of death.

I guess you're right Bitmasher, the intellegence surrounding "Microscopic Lead Spray Assualt" has some flaws.... My theory did not incorporate the length of time in which the lead poisoning would take effect.

The hunter will need a more rapid, fast acting, efficient take down maneuver. So I've used your advise and incorporated the annoying rhythms of Polka, the soft sounds of Barry Mannilow, and if I'm right, "Old re-runs of Christmas with Laurence's Family", into one sound that is so mind baffling that it can place an entire herd of buffalo in a seizure like state long enough for the hunter to hit his prey with an accordion.

Seperate my friend we are vulnerable but together we are just annoying!!! We should probably just stick to guns!!

300 win mag is my choice for elk knock down power elk are strong if you dont hit them good they will travel along ways

Personally I have good luck with a 7MM Rem Magnum with good quality 160 gr bullets.

When you are retired you have alot of time to shoot so you try different things to get good/better/best -well you know what I mean-

I found a post about using a 2x10x10 piece of lumber @ 100yds keep shooting till you empty your gun- most of the shooting is free hand you tend to get good at hitting pieces of the 10x10
cause when it is all boiled down shot placement is the KEY

you read about how this caliber is forgiving
ie "you are a lousy shot" and the lead tore off part of the games body- that is the only reason you even got close!

so no matter which rifle/caliber you use shot placement is KEY

I'd start at 270 win with bonded core bullet and go up to the 300 WM with fail safes. Anything that produced more energy would work just fine, but wouldn't be necessary. My choice for many years was a 30-06 with partitions.
I have recently chosen to go with the 300 wsm with bonded core. But, this choice has nothing to do with the round and everything to do with the rifle. It cuts another 2 pounds off the weight I'm carrying.
Also, as far as a scope. I've tried many different powers over the years. I don't see any neccessity for anything larger than a good quality 2x-7x 32mm. Unless the rifle will have other uses. Then I would put the limit at 3x-9x 40mm.

I always carry more game bags than I think I'll need and plenty of salt and drinking water. A piece of game bag has many other uses. Bandages, protection from the elements, sun shield, staining, etc...

I also have the many uses of a large panel of blaze orange plastic sheet handy. A tin cup and a piece of plastic sheet will collect more water if needed. Water condenses on plastic, (An old dessert hunting trick). Protection from weather or wet ground, trail marking, visibility, protecting meat from the elements, etc..

A few 2" squares of acrylic plastic, 1/8" to a 1/4" thick, make good fire starters.

Along with the lip balm. I also carry hand and face lotion.
