Am looking for any suggestions for loading up some 45/70 400 grain cast bullets. Anyone got any favorites?

You're brave. I just finished shooting off a box of Corbon 350gr. in my guide gun. My shoulder is super tender. What are you using the 400's for? Just curious.

Prolly just a few wild hogs. It's one of my favorite guns to shoot, so no telling when I might get the urge to take it out. I just bought a ton of 400 grain cast bullets, and a bunch of 500 grain bullets I am going to load for it.

Those'll nail them down to the dirt. I agree, that rifle is alot of fun. Expensive though. I'm going to try my hand at reloading this fall. If it goes well, then I'll be able to use it more. Those 500's sound like they'd be fun! Ouch....

500 grains of hardcast solid will certainly penetrate any critter that walks the Earth. I like a 550 grain LFNGC at 1500 fps for dangerous game. I load it with 40 grains of H322 for 1550 fps. It duplicates Randy Garrett's Hammerhead ammo. This load has taken Africa's Big Five.

I also have loaded a 450 grain LFNGC hardcast bullet to 1800 fps. This has penetrated Bison completely.

Had a Marlin .45-70 LA rifle mod. 1895. I used cartridges with 400 grs lead bullets. Load them with 50 grs of Kemira N 135. Worked well at roedeer.

If you are looking for a 300 gr. load that is mild 45-70-300 gr. Speer HP, Powder IMR4198 41.0 gr. Primer WLR COL 2.535

Here is my Load for my BFR handgun in 45-70.

I will have to give that a shot, I have 500 of the 535 gr. Postell bullet. I loaded them with 70 gr. of black powder for my Shiloh Sharps before I sold it. I was going to try the 70 gr. of black powder in the BC and see what they will go. But your load sounds like it may work. :thumbsup1:

My favorite smokeless load for my Sharps is 45grs. of 3031 with the 535gr. Postell bullet. Chrony shows it moving along at 1600 fps.
Another one I just started playing with before winter is the 500gr. Barnes TSX.
Same powder and load but the chrony shows it at 1550 fps.

Been using anmarlin 1895 for years--Gunsmith was making a guide gun years before marlin did-- mine has 18 1/2" barrel( for horse use) -is ported- peep and hi rise scope-(removable) arctic finish and custom checkering--very nice --i load mostly R7 in bullets from 320 -405 gr--many are hard cast bullets we casted from lynotype we had brought up for them--also use Speer 350 gr RN for bears etc--made a real nice gun for carrying on horse esp in grizz country.Good medium range mooser also.
