Most land that I hunt on is private.
I also noticed that a lot of people post there land, but if you ask they will let you hunt.
They just want to know who is there.

I hunt both public and private but have to admit the first place I head for is private.

I have hunted public and private land. Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming (along with other western states) have a lot of public land. Just need to make sure you map out access roads and do some scouting if you are going to do public. It is also not a bad idea to take some provisions and cold weather clothes with you if you are going to hunt remote mountainous public areas. In Colorado at least I have seen nasty storms roll in within the course of a morning hike.

I mainly hunt private. I do not like to hunt public land because around where i live you get a lot of morons out hunting.

I hear you on the moron factor. I hunted with a guy once that about got his head blown off because he wore a white hat deer hunting -- and that was on private land. Yet I also sat down to take a breather once on public land and heard a bullet zing overhead and thunk into a tree behind me.

More than anything, access has more to bear on my decision to go public or private. Out in Montana and Idaho it wasn't a problem finding plenty of public land, and if you hiked away from the road a bit you'd rarely see anyone. Yet here in Alabama the number of acres of public land per capita is a lot less.

I hunt wherever there is game. Here in Montana most people seem to just road hunt ride around in that warm pick-up truck listening to the radio and drinking hot coffee. Montana has a vast amount of public land, and if you get out and walk away from the road you will rarely see another hunter.

Speaking of walking, gunslinger, how'd the weekend chasing Billy in the Bob go?

I hunt private and public. My experiences in Sask were very similar to Gunslingers. Opening day was a parade of pickups driving from field to field. Hunting back in the bush even a couple hundred yards and I never saw a soul. The others were even kind enough to push the deer by me. Thanks guys!

Got shot at once but in all fairness they probably didn't know I was hiding in some tall grass in front of them. We were both after the same deer - I didn't know they were behind me in a spruce thicket and they didn't know I was crawling through waist high swamp grass and willows...they shot first.

Yeah you got to be careful when you are well hidden, sometimes it can be counter productive when other hunters don't know you are there....

Welcome Saskie, haven't seen you around before, I assume your handle must be a play on the word "Saskatchewan"?

I'm originally from Saskatchewan but am stationed in Nova Scotia at the moment. I haven't hunted in 12 yrs and am really looking forward to getting back into it next year.
