Has anyone tried to hunt moose with either calibers .444Marlin or .45-70 or .450Marlin. I would think that these would be optimal for shots less than 100 yards. Anybody have any experience?...Peter

The 45-70 is a better choice than the 444...no experence with the 450. Hotload the 45-70 with 405 grain jacketed to 2000 fps...you get about 3000 ft/lbs. Good to 150 yards. Never took a moose with my 45-70...just kept it behind the cabin door for quick bear medicine. I use a 338 Win mag or 300 Wby mag...alot of our shots are beyond 300 yards...work wonderful...drops moose like a bag of rocks.

| I have never hunted moose with a lever action before, just whitetail deer. However I do own and hunt deer with the 444 Marlin. The only draw back would be the distance a hunter might have in taking their shot. It would be a 100 yard gun on moose, perhaps a 150 yard gun in the 45/70 caliber. |

| I have been on three hunting trip to Canada in moderate/heavy timber with Marlin 1895 45/70 with 350 grain Hornady bullets and found that at range's under 100 yards to be very deadly. I do how every think keeping the distance under 150 yds. 45/70 has a much better choice of bullets. I have had no experience with the 450 Marlin, don't see the needed already having a 45/70 that is, but would like to try out one of the guide guns Marlin offers. |

I hunt mostly deer with the marlin 444, and it will shoot and cleanly kill to about 200yds. I have never shot a rifle that is more acurate than the 444 with nosler 240gr hollow points. prints clover leafs at 100yds. from center of each bullet hole the pattern was .320 " not bad for a bullet that measures in at .430". and thats no bull.
