Got up a tree stand early this morning, and could have killed either of 2 fair-size bucks, but opted to let them both go. The largest of the two came in as it was just getting light enough to shoot. He stood, for a long time, under a licking branch that was hiding the true size of his rack. Had a great visual on every hair, except the top of his head. Anyway, I let him and the smaller one go, hoping for a monster. This evening, a local "group" was turning out deer dogs and racing up and down the back road trying to catch dogs, or kill deer. My suspicions point to the latter. You would have thought these guys could at least wait a couple more weeks, but hell broke out early. Had one snort at the dogs(or me). Twas fun getting out there..

Hi tesoronut,
so seeing deer is always interesting. Hope you'll get one of these bucks soon. Which rifle had you with you?
don't forget to post pics when you got the buck.
Regards

I had my Knight 50 cal. Black powder gun. Regular gun season(dogs allowed) is 2 weeks away. I usually try to enjoy Black Powder season, because once dogs are allowed, the fun is pretty much over with for me.

WoW,, with Va's abundant deer herd they allow dog running? Sigh, Thats pitiful. Running deer with dogs just dont sit well with me at all either. Too dang easy. No work involved other than training the dogs.

First, let me say that Law Enforcement is all but non-existant. These guys know that, and if they want to turn the dogs out before it is legally acceptible, they do it. I heard it all, Saturday. And yes, it is very frustrating when you can't hunt on your own land without having this activity imposed on you. But the fact of the matter is that it's not going to change. Too many politics, and too many "big name" people involved in the "sport". So, with all of that said, I'm forced to learn to live with it in this area, as I have for my entire life. The good news is that the early black powder season is much more enjoyable because this "vigillante" activity is kept to a minimum. Just wait until opening day of general firearm season. There will be no peace then, even if you are sitting on your front porch, in the middle of your farm, minding your own business. But I'm going to try to enjoy things until then.
