| Guess what...I'm posted. Does anyone know any hunting or shooting clubs in the Ottawa area? Or have info on available ranges. I doubt I'll have time to get out hunting this year (I leave for there on 18 Aug). Hopefully I'll be able to come back here and hunt this season. Any info would be nice. |

So does that mean you won't get to hunt in NS this year? If so that sucks, sounds like you had already been doing prep for this fall....
On the bright side you'll have a decent hockey team to root for.... |

I'm hoping that I'll be able to get back here and hunt this year. It's a long drive but do-able (1300km/700mi). And my new unit is supposed to be quite flexible with when we take leave (shore unit).
On the plus side, Sask will now only be a 2 day drive so it will be possible to hunt back home as well, but not this year.
Sports will be awesome...Sens and the Renegades (CFL). It's supposed to be a really nice city, although a tad expensive to live in. |

| I drug out the map and looked at the drive from NS to Ottawa and your right that does look like a haul. Well hope you get to do some hunting; wherever it might be. |

I'm pretty sure that I'll be able to get back here some this season. Next year I'll probably hunt back in Sask.
I don't think that I'll bother actually hunting in Ont, since I'm only going to be there 2-3 years and then back to NS (it's an advantage of being Navy - our posting locations are either Halifax/Ottawa/Recruit School if you're Home Port Division-Atlantic)
In the ultimate act of faith I battled the black flies, bush and sickness and got my bad weather stand set up over the weekend. |

You should try your luck hunting around Ottawa, there are plenty of whitetail deer and wild turkey around the city.

I'd heard that -in fact where I'll be working at CRDC Shirley's Bay I'm told it's completely normal to see a dozen deer grazing in the field around the facility every morning. Unfortunately there's no hunting allowed.
I was thinking more about access to Crown land or hunter-friendly farmer areas. |

There are a few ranges in the Ottawa area. I belong to Eastern Ontario Handgun Club (www.EOHC.com). About 20 mins east of Ottawa with excellent facilities, 3 handgun ranges and a 200 metre rifle range.
West of Ottawa is The Stittsville ranges (clicky and expensive) also for military folks theres good old Connaught range.
Ottawa area boasts some excellent deer hunting. Currently area farmers are planning to hold a "cull" due to high deer numbers, ilegal of course but shows how many deer are around. Try talking to area farmers south of Ottawa or crown land such as Limerick forest which is near where I hunt. Good luck |

I know how difficult it is to hunt when you are in the military. My older brother is in the army and he gets posted every three years or so.
I'm from Hamilton originally but have lived in Hawkesbury for about 7 years now.
If you have the opertunity to hunt the Ottawa area, you should. Lanark county is 'dirty' with deer, as I'm sure you have heard. The farmers are crying about the deer eating up all the crops and is not uncommon to see a large number of deer in the fields. The hard part is getting permission. Seems the farmers complain but don't like to grant permission.
When my brother gets back from the States, where he posted for a year, he may end up in Kingston or Ottawa. He prefers Kingston because Ottawa real estate is a bit outragous.
