Good to have you here country boy :thumbsup1: may want to start this topic in the modern archery forum. I would say you need to learn the proper form for shooting, and then work on your tuning from there.

Moving to Modern Archery

Welcome Country boy82.

Could be several things causing inconsistent shot placement, but most common is your anchor point. Do you use a kisser? Thumb your mouth corner? Whatever it is you do you must be consistent with the anchor point EVERY time.

What type of bow is a Robin Hood, recurve, long or compound bow?

Regardless of the type, there could be many problems resulting in your inconsistency, but one that stands out is anchor point.

How do you anchor and is it consistent?

its a compound bow. i try to shoot the same every time. i put my thumb to the corner of my mouth every time. i think one of my problems might also be that i dont have the peice that holds my extra sting out of the way. i didnt know i need that but i noticed that it has started to tear my arrows up at the ends.

I think you found your problem  If the arrow is hitting the string it will throw it all over the place. Either replace the piece, if it can be, or treat yourself to a nice new setup :D Sounds like a good excuse for an early X-mas present

I am also trying to figure out how you're holding the bow to get your thumb to the corner of your mouth. Makes me wonder if the bow is set to the right length for you.

could it be to long or short of a draw. i use a thumb release not one that goes on the rist. if that makes a difference.

I still say you first concern is the arrow hitting the string. Won't matter how consistent your anchor is until the arrow comes off the bow straight.

Yeah, arrow hitting ANYTHING on the way out will cause inconsistent groups. Other things that greenhorns might watch out for is having a death grip on the bow, makes you tend to tilt/lean the bow left or right and can contribute to "flingging" the bow towards the target as you release the arrow. Make sure you don't hold at full draw too long until you get a few thousand shots under your belt. Check for tightness of your rest, sights and overdraw if you have one.
I would also advise you to have the draw length checked and matched to you. A good quality tuning should also be done. And last but not to be overlooked, make sure all your arrows are same length, and weight as are all your field tips/broad-heads, nocks set so fletching doesn't hit rest as arrow leaves bow and that fletching are the same length and style on each arrow.

I am not sure I understand what is being meant by "extra string". That's why I didn't address that possible problem any further other than to say that an arrow hitting anything was a problem.

Do you mean it hits a cable? or do you have actual extra string hanging from your bow?

redrider is correct, that should be the first thing that you fix.

Release really wont cause a problem as long as you grip it the same everytime especially if you are using your thumb as anchor reference. I prefer a wrist release and a kisser button.
