Hey,
I am planning a Colorado public land elk mule deer and bear hunt in the 2004 season. I have never hunted colorado so any inf. will be appreciated. Me and some buddies want to go to hunt public land by ourselves. We will be hunting for a little over 2 months if we can find a place to hunt. I need some inf. on the units to hunt and where there are no rifle bull elk draw permits or archery draw permits we are interested in over the counter. I also was wondering where or who to call to get a public land booklet. I was also wondering if fourwheelers are legal to hunt with to get us out in the middle of nowhere and be away from other campers. I was also wondering if we are aloud to camp out of campgrounds on the hunting seasons. I also need to no if it takes a 4X4 truck to drive on the log roads or dirt roads that get you in the back country. Thanks a lot and I really appreciate it. |

Most units in the north west corner of colorado have over the counter bull tags. Although there are some "trophy" units that are draw only.
I know unit 22 does have over counter bull tags; however I'm not sure if these are available to someone who is not a resident. Best to check the dow (department of wildlife) web site, they have quite a bit of information that would be useful. They will have public land guides as well. Think they even sell a computer CD with topo maps and the like. DOW site
As far as I know ATV's are not banned; however you have to stay on designated trails. And as for needing a 4x4, well, it certainly won't hurt, and would be more advisable than say a honda civic...

| IN REGARDS TO USING ATV'S- THEY HELP A LITTLE BUT YOUR BEST BET IS TO SEE IF YOU COULD RENT HORSES. VERY LIMITED ATV USE. IF YOU REALLY WANT TO GET BACK IN WHERE MOST OF THE GAME IS YOU CAN ONLY DO IT ON FOOT OR BY HORSE BACK. BEEN THERE 3 TIMES AND TWICE WITHOUT HORSES & WOULD NEVER GO WITHOUT THEM AGAIN. |
